Pain from hernia and twisted bowel
You probably didn't do anything to cause it. From the symptoms - sounds like some type of twist - internal blockage... I do hope you get it fixed. if you have hernia - the muscles may spasm when you start hurting - putting more pressure on the twisted part - causing more pain...
I had IBS and cramps - but "pain due to blockage" feels so different. Plus once the food passes that "point" the very sharp pain suddenly goes away leaving only slight discomfort - tenderness... until the next meal...
As I mentioned before - Ct-scans or even a whole GI tract (with barium) flow test did not show anything abnormal.. Only during surgery my doc found and fixed the defect..

yes. The same surgeon that did my RNY.
2 times they ignored the "test show nothing abnormal" and scheduled surgery. First time was GB plus hernia.. that was fixed .. only to open again 3 weeks post op... then based on symptoms we knew I had a twist somewhere inside... and when I was tired living with pain - I scheduled surgery..(the pain was intermittent - on for 2-3 months every time I ate more solid foods, off for a couple of weeks or a month)
When the pain was non stop for 3 months I scheduled surgery... Then I was fine until my small intestine flipped.. and I was dealing with pain after eating... it felt like things were getting "stuck" again. My surgeon did not want to operate...and again "your tests are OK" ... but I was adamant that something is not right... Once he "unflipped" the guts - I am doing OK.
I still have pain due to IBS but nothing like it was before... plus the pain is much different... and mostly triggered by me getting off my strict diet... not like we ever do get off the diet, right??? lol...

Sorry to hear your ordeal. Peterson hernia and twisted bowels are very common for post op RNY...
If they fixed the hernia well - chances are you will be fine. It rarely happens again.
Can it reopen? Sure... But most of the time one surgery is all a person need..
Good luck..

Good afternoon, I am having a Petersen Hernia repair in a few days and was wondering how was the recovery. I had my RNY in March 2010and been having pain for about 3 years thinking the same thing as you. I;m a little nervous but so upset with myself that I didn't get seen by my WLS surgeon instead of wasting money on ER visits.
