Can you eat fruit or does it cause dumping?

I am scheduled for rny surgery on the 16th. I am nervous though because I can not use any sugar substitutes. They ALL (Stevia, Splenda, etc) cause severe me to have craps and diarrhea. Since sugar causes dumping I do not know what I will do for things like protein shakes.

I did find a shake that has no sweeteners at all but  it tastes horrible without something to sweeten it even a little. I am hoping that putting some pureed fruit or baby food fruit in the shakes will make it sweet enough that I will be able to drink it without causing dumping.

Has anyone had problems with fruit causing dumping? Will bananas be OK to eat? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

just to clarify,Stevia is not a sugar substitute. It is a naturally occurring plant sweetener.

I don't know what to call a lot of these things, artificial sweetener doesn't work either. I have gotten really sick because a package said "All Natural" or "No Artificial Sweeteners" etc on the package. The items weren't even designated as diet or low cal! Foolishly I didn't take the time to read ALL the small printed ingredients. Then I ate or drank the product and before I knew it I was having severe pain and looking for a bathroom! Then I check the package and low and behold...it has Stevia in it or some other "Natural" additive to sweeten it. One time it was even in Popcorn. Never dreamed I had to check popcorn!!! It may be a naturally occurring plant sweetener but it is also a sugar substitute. The companies are using it as a substitute for sugar to cut down on the calories.

I've never had a protein shake, so it's not the end of the world if you have to do without ...   you could try the plan of eating 30g protein in 30 days, 60g at 60 days and 90g at 90 days.   It's not as easy as chugging a shake but is perfectly doable with other protein sources!

Wow Kim, that is awesome. Congratulations on doing so well. I thought everyone used protein shakes especially right after surgery to make sure they got enough protein. Looks like I will be doing without also. Hopefully I will do as well as you. Thank you for your reply.

Be careful with fruits.  They can slow or even stop your weight loss.  Many people skip fruit until they reach their goal weight. Unjury chicken soup is not bad, especially if your plan is to just use protein powder early out from surgery.

Stevia should not cause gastric distress.  Check the labels for sweeteners that end in 'itol.  Those are the culprits that usually cause gastric distress.

I don't dump on fruit but some people do.

Many people don't dump on sugar after RNY.  Most that do dump on sugar can tolerate some amount of it.  You would most likely be able to tolerate a protein shake with a small amount of sugar, under 10 grams.

Are you working with a registered dietician?  if not, I would find one that can assist you in finding ways to meet your protein needs.

If you have not tried the Organic Stevia, I would try it, but not til after surgery. If you have been using Splenda, the chemicals used in processing may be what your body is rejecting.

Surgery will change everything. You could put applesauce in, do count your carbs and figure that in..  Everyone responds differently, I do not tolerate bananas well, but love the things. You might want to have canned fruit on hand that are packed in water...and a variety...your tastes will change drastically.  A  natural peanut butter could be added to  a shake to change the flavor..and add protein. My Mom used to add it to her oatmeal, and eat with a soft boiled egg. If you can ma**** with a fork to consistency of baby food, it is considered the same as.

Dumping is caused by carbs and people who exhibit it have a very low tolerance for changes in  blood sugar levels. The dumping is a method for your body to rid of excess sugar.

After a few days with stable sugars you might have more tolerance...for things you have not been tolerating. The surgery did stabliize my sgars, but it took a couple of weeks for me to figure out where my tolerance was.  You will find that the strict diet diary is your best tool for this purpose..
