New post op with terrible taste in mouth
Hello all...i just had my bypass last thursday 1/28. I was in the hospital for 3 days with post op nausea, not very fun. Since the surgery, I have had a horrible taste in my mouth, almost salty. It is constant and my breath smells horrible. Did others experience this? and when did it resolve?? Nothing tastes good to me and thus i'm having difficulty getting all of my liquids in. maybe it's reflux?
i also still have a lot of gas, and i feel my stomach rumbling. is this normal??
thanks!!

Totally normal. It could be from the anesthesia. It takes a long time for it to get out of your system.
It could be your body going into ketosis (fat burning mode). As long as you are actually burning fat for energy, and not carbs, you will have a weird taste in your mouth and funky breath. It does get better with time.
Look at the "nothing tastes good" part as a "gift horse". If it doesn't taste good, you won't eat! Drinking in not optional, It's MANDITORY! YOU MUST FIND A WAY TO GET YOUR FLUIDS IN! Dehydration is SERIOUS and will land you back in the hospital. Keep trying different flavors and temperatures until you find one that works. Peppermint and ginger herbal teas were a life saver for me.
The rumbling stomach is also normal. You just had your entire digestive system rearranged. It's bound to rebel. Some of us have noisy stomachs forever. I'm 5 years out from RNY and my stomach STILL makes a lot of noise. Don't mistake that noise for hunger pangs. It's not! If I fed myself every time my stomach made noise I would have gained all my weight back.
All those things are totally normal. Ketosis or fat burning will often cause you breath to smell terrible. Once your body adjusts it will go away. My breath was terrible at first and sugar free mints were my friends for awhile. Like Rocky my stomach still is really noisy. My hubby thinks there might be an alien in there! Usually it is loudest shortly after I eat but can make noise at any time. Like Rocky said you must drink and then drink some more! The most frequent problem after surgery is dehydration, and that will make you even more nauseous. I found that warm teas like peppermint and room temperature Crystal Light worked best for me. I know everything seems new and confusing now,but soon it will be your new normal. I am about 31/2 years post op and weigh 121 down from my highest of 273. I love my new life even with a noisy stomach and you will too!

It could be thrush also. Do you have a white coating on your tongue?
