Dont do it
I almost use the word 'eschew' today and then changed to avoid. In future, I will use eschew.

If you want more issues then what you have before surgery, dont do it. I have and know many people who have had RNY, the band and the sleeve, that have exchanged their food intake with alcohol. ITS NOT GOOD.
I never drank and I have several other people that I know that didnt drink before surgery that do now. There was never alcohol in my house. A few years ago, probably 7 years out I had a drink, I thought wow, this makes me feel great, and I had another and another.....No I wouldnt call myself an alcoholic, I call it what happened to me after this surgery, because like I said I never drank before. Yes, I blame the RNY for many things, like I never needed glasses, they tell me because I lost alot of weight that there is fat in your brain and when the shrinks your eyes shift, therefore you need glasses, I dont sleep, I have panic attacks, that I never had before, I had a nervous break down that I never had before, and I blame this surgery for it. I now have a low white blood count that I never had before surgery. No Dr can explain it, but I CAN. ALL these issues came after about 6 years out.
I am writing Dr. Phil on this, and I hope that he will get me on his show so that I can warn people about this surgery!
for posterity
you only want on his show to make some $
Maybe you aren't an alcoholic. According to a wise philosopher, an alcoholic would attend meetings. You're just a drunk.

I'm so sorry that you're having a bad experience with your surgery. So ok you're not an alcoholic, you do know that alcohol has sugar in it right?, some people with rny have dumping issues, your drinking is only making your health issues worse.
The people you talk about that had wls & exchanged their food with alcohol is called transfer addiction. So ok, maybe you're not doing that, but you're also not dealing with the issues on why you got to be obese. Get to the root of your food issues, its not just that you like to eat, there's more to it, whether you're ready to deal with it is another matter entirely.
No one surgery is better than the other, what works for one may not work for another. T-Rebel
There are many different things that can contribute to alcohol addiction after gastric bypass, including -- as you yourself noted -- the quick, hard buzz from a very small amount of alcohol. BUT... There is nothing about the surgery that caused you to take that first drink... or the second... or third, or fourth. You said it yourself: it felt great so you have another and then another!
The surgery didn't cause you to crave alcohol. Did it change the way your body absorbs and metabolizes alcohol? Yes, absolutely. Did it eliminate your ability to "just say no"? Absolutely not.
I'm dying to know where you got the information about fat in your brain and your eyesight. If it was a physician, you need a new one.
14 years out; 190 pounds lost, 165 pound loss maintained
You don't drown by falling in the water. You drown by staying there.
If by chance you get on Dr. Phil he will tell you you can't change what you don't acknowledge. You admittedly consume too much alcohol. You need to acknowledge that and take responsibility to do something to get it under control. I chose wls because I consumed too much food. Sure I had four pregnancies but there are plenty of women who are not obese after that. I ate too much. Have I had issues after surgery? Yes but they are not as devastating to me as those associated with my obesity. I am presently recovering from an ulcer so I take prilosec. Better than injecting insulin daily and using oxygen and a cpap to ensure I didn't die in my sleep. Maybe your surgery did unmask some problems but it is time for you to get some help with them. If it takes Dr. Phil to get real with you I hope he does put you on. Not only could he help you but make others aware of the BENEFITS of the surgery.
I guess you losing weight didn't help your brain function like research suggests.

Maybe needing glasses is just a normal progression in Life as we get older. I don't think any of your issues were caused by RNY except for the alcohol the Dr.s warn about, and I think it's wrong of you to tell people not to do it, Dr. Phil won't see you. This is a wonderful surgery thousands done every day. This is just my opinion I hope you can turn things around for yourself. Maybe go back to the basics liquid diet no coffee, no booze fresh foods, and get healthy again best of luck to you.
