No longer overweight for the first time since age 6! Question about clothes...

I realize the milestones I set for myself are mostly arbitrary, but it still felt good to finally get below a BMI of 25 this morning! By the BMI scale, I'm officially no longer overweight for the first time since first grade. The last time I was my current weight, I was about 11 or 12 years old.

To celebrate, my husband took me shopping, which felt AWESOME after 15 months of living in mostly clothes from Goodwill with varying degrees of wear and trendiness. It made me wonder though, if I'm just barely not overweight, where do truly thin people get their clothes? At Banana Republic and Gap, I'm in a size 4-6 pants and an XS in tops. What the heck do people with BMIs of 18 wear?

Edit for clarification: I am not having any trouble finding clothes myself, nor do I ever expect to. I am not skinny. I am aware vanity sizing exists, and that's EXACTLY my point -- if vanity sizing has gotten us to the point that someone with a BMI of 25 wears an XS, how do thin people even find clothes?

That is a great question. I know a lot of thin people like Ann Taylor, Banana Republic, gap etc. You could also try juniors size as the usually are smaller?

But I can relate, I was heavy from 6 years old. You need to post more pics!

Most of my better fitting things are junior size one but you are right it is hard to find small clothes. I have even been know to wear a pair of girls size 16 jeans! Lots of stores around here like Penny's and Macy's carry nothing smaller than a size 2 or 4. One time I went to get some size 2 dress pants at Macy's and they had to ship them to my house from another store. I guess that's proof that our society is not as thin as it once was!

Look at the bags the thin teenagers carry. American eagle, old navy, Hollister, aerie, etc.  also talbots has nice small clothes. What a great problem to have!

I would burn that bridge when I get there. That may not be a problem. There is a long term board member here who is very slim, and she doesn't have a difficulty finding clothes.

Another consideration is that vanity sizing exists. If you look at vintage clothing, you will find today's 6 is something like a 12 in clothing from 20+ years ago.

The majority of my clothing comes from thrift stores. I want style instead of trends, so I enjoy finding things that are a bit different. I have a good sized wardrobe of professional dress clothing, and most of it was inexpensive.

Congrats on being "normal!"  I have wondered the same thing, the other day I tried on a pair of jeans at Macy's, they were a size 6, they fit and I was freaking out!  but I am 18lbs from my goal so I don't know that I want to buy 90 dollar jeans if I go down a size or two in a couple months.

Looking for size 6 can be tricky. Macy's has always been my go to store, but I remember when I was a size 16 I had some trouble finding it, now that I am looking for smaller sizes all I see are 16, 14 and 12's in abundance.  I am really trying to hold out now until I get to goal to buy new clothes but I do try a lot of clothing on!  The other day I tried on a bejewelled evening gown and I was having a fashion high in the dressing room.  I've decided I must buy an fancy evening gown when I get to goal and then find an occasion to wear it!

So much fun trying on clothes now huh?  Congrats again!

When I was too small for off the rack sizes, I found clothes in styles that I liked, purchased the smallest size available and then took them to a dressmaker who altered them so that the fit was right for me.

Skinny folks shop in Europe where the average size is an American 4 and sizes drop down into the negative numbers by American size standards.  Think American size -8.  It is so frustrating to figure out!  In Belgium I wear a Medium and in the US most XS are too big.  THere is no logic to it.

American Vanity sizing is real.  Don't be fooled by thinking you are skinny if you wear single digit sized clothes.  BMI and actual weight are more telling IMO.
