Musing about food neurosis
I'm musing, as the title says. I've had some thoughts of what the best way to eat is for me. I'd like to incorporate bone broth for example because of all the things I've read about the benefits. But then I'm thinking I'd have to drink it between meals. Then I go on to think that would be almost like eating all day long. Then my head starts freaking out, lol. I am so neurotic when it comes to food. I don't have to freak, just realize that if I really want bone broth, have a cup prior to a meal in a controlled manner. I don't have to freak out about things.
It's the same thing when I think about fruit or starchy veggies. My surgeon plan says that should be the 3rd on the plate. Right now I don't get there, after the meat and veggies I don't have room. But I have kumquat trees in my yard and grow sweet potatoes as a ground cover year round (thank you Florida). It is something I could incorporate, but should I. There goes the freaking out again! lol. I just have to laugh at it. I'm just wondering if other people are as neurotic as me when it comes to food?
I freaked-out when I witnessed our chickens feasting on cow-pies finding little comfort when it was explained they are pecking out the grains/grasses in the manure. My DD will be freaking-out when she finds out my DH is filling our freezer with one of those cow-pie-making steers she has given names to. I'll trade you free-range, super-organic eggs and antibiotic-free, grass-fed beef for some kumquats and sweet potatoes?
If I had any ripe I would send them to you. :) The weather this year stopped most of the kumquat production. But when I get to the point where we have some I'll let you know. They even are talking about cancelling the kumquat festival this year. Which is actually good for me cause I don't have to make the fruit decision yet, lol.

I don't know much about bone broth, or the amount needed to see any benefit from it, but I'd say maybe replace one snack with a serving of bone broth so you don't feel like you're eating the whole day. There are a couple of post-ops here who make their own..hopefully they'll respond. FWIW, I eat 3 small meals and have two snacks a day, usually. It works out to me having something about every 3.5 hours or so.
Sometimes, I DO feel like that I'm allllways eating or drinking something...because I am. I drink tea, coffee, or water all day between meals/snacks. Conventional thinking MDs, and even some WLS docs, say to eat 3 meals and day and no snacks. If I did that, my blood sugar would tank and I'd be in real trouble then. I started with symptoms of RH at 2 years out, so I need to keep my blood sugar regulated. So maybe I eat more often than some other post-ops, but it works for me.
Re fruits and starches; I don't eat fruit at all...ever. I never have room for it, and even if I did I can't eat it. Fruit-the fruit I liked pre RNY anyway-makes me sick; even paired with protein. My body treats fruit sugar as just...sugar, so even though my plan allows it if I have room, I don't eat it. My plan also allows for 2 servings of starch per day...but I don't eat anything starchy now. I went down the road of adding starches back in, and wound up with a regain, so now I just keep it simple and focus on protein first and then non-starchy veggies. I feel SO much better when I don't even attempt to eat starches. I think it's totally fine to NEVER bring starches OR fruit back into our diets...though I know some will disagree.
As for being neurotic about food, I know if I let myself...I can completely overthink things food-related, so I try with all my might not to; it is constant work-and it always will be that way.

That term "Bone Broth" kills me... it is called soup. That is the way it was made forever until most people stopped making it. :) It is good for you, but trendy....hahahaha.
I eat soup as a meal often and find it very satisfying. It is not like drinking water, it does make you fuller. You could absolutely have it as a snack. Very low calorie and low fat. Once you cool it and the fat rises to the top you can discard it...If it is broth soup with veggies and meat, eat most of the broth first then eat the 'stuff'.
My Doc says fruit then starchy carbs - if you have room- after the meat and veggies. Do I sometimes eat fruit with greek yogurt? Yes. Face it there is not a veggie at every meal. Today I plan on having berries as a snack by themselves. I like that they are at the end of the list, but he doesn't say never. Because the mindset of never could send me off the deep end. :) That being said I only have fruit maybe a couple times a week. Like you said by the time meat and veggies is eaten there isn't room.

I make "stock" or "bone broth" all the time, I freeze it and take it out to make soups. Ocassionally I just have the stock, I like to keep it in the freezer for winter colds, etc. Right now I am eating my lunch of sausage, bean and kale soup made with my "stock" and added some canned tomatoes, fennel, onions and carrots, cannelini beans, sausage and kale. My family all love homemade soups, I don't add pasta or rice to them, but will cook it separately for the family.
I can't let a good chicken carcass go to waste... make broth all the time. During the winter i like to have a pot of soup in my fridge. Easy meals.
