Considering revision from VSG to RNY -- Questions about RNY
on 1/14/16 7:58 am
When I was debating between the two, my doc said nausea is actually a lot more common with VSG than RNY because it's a closed ("high pressure") system with a lot more stomach acid. I had horrible GERD-related nausea all the time before my RNY and haven't had a single instance of it since. My husband had VSG and was really nauseous right after his surgery, but didn't have any at all after the first day post-op. Everyone is different though. My work bestie had nausea for 6 solid months after her VSG.
I had nausea the day of surgery, and not once since. I can't say I know anyone that does.

Grim - did you have RNY or DS?
I had RNY. But if I had a sleeve and needed a revision, I would look into the DS, even though it is more difficult to find a surgeon with DS experience. While the RYN gives some improved results over the sleeve, it does not appear to be significant enough to do revision from sleeve to RYN, absent other factors.
When they did my RYN, they repaired a hiatal hernia - that was the best silver lining. I did not admit how much the GERD was bothering me before surgery, but I have not had any problem since the surgery. Halleluja!!

I had RNY.
The most common reason for revising from VSG to RNY is gerd. I have no idea why the OP is interested. But if it was a weight loss issue, looking into the DS from VSG makes a lot of sense, but for gerd, bypass is better.
When I was looking into surgeries, there was not a single doctor in New England who was a vetted DS surgeon.

I was nauseous pretty much constantly with the band. I've experienced it 4 times in 6 months, since RNY. So not never but not a lot in comparison!
Sharon - I was diagnosed w/ a hiatal hernia when getting an X-ray/CT/barium swallow a while ago. I've had no GERD issues at all with my VSG. And I, too, can't find a surgeon in New England who can do a DS (how can that BE when I live in Boston? Medical Mecca!). Anyway I think my VSG has either gotten bigger/doesn't serve me well. I've put on weight over the past 5 years, lots of life stressors (deaths, job loss, etc). At my current weight of 220 I find joint pain, etc., making it very hard to do any significant exercise. I'm contemplating going with my original surgeon, but am also seeing another who is very well known for revisions.
To be honest, it doesn't sound like a revision would be beneficial. Life stressors will never go away. You need to find a way to deal with them without turning to food. I know someone now who's had 4 different WLS/revisions and is still gaining weight. If you don't change the underlying cause, the problem will remain.

I've had very little nausea from RNY. I had a revision from the old (and terrible) VBG. With the VBG, I vomited daily. I can count on one hand the times I have been sick in the 5 years since my revision surgery.
You might want to check with your insurance. Many insurance companies have a one WLS per lifetime restriction unless you can prove a life threatening, mechanical failure of your VSG.
I seem to remember seeing a post that you couldn't get back into OH with your old account. Was Lucyvanpelt your original screen name? We "grew up" on OH around the same time. It's nice to see familiar faces, so I'm trying to place you in my memory.
