Diabetic almost 1 week post op from gastric bypass
Just had surgery on the 8 th of this month and have only been home for 2 days. I am 5ft 4in, 22 yrs old and a diabetic. My pre op weight was 267 lbs. So far my post op weight is 257. I am basically just writing this post to get some info from other young diabetics who has had gastric bypass surgery. I was sent home with instructions to only resume taking 2 of my 8 prescriptions I have been on since I was 15. One called synthroid due to hypo active thyroid disorder and one insulin for the diabetes. I'd love to hear the process others in my situation went through. One other issue I am having is a sweating problem. Fingers, toes and face are freezing. The past like 7 to 10 years I've been overly sweaty in certain areas like my back and face but since surgery even my knee caps have begun to sweat. I have no fevers and blood sugars are within range just wondering if this happened to anyone else before and any tips you have because it is currently snowing and about 16 degrees where I live and I'm sleeping with a fan and the window open each night to stop my hot flashes or at least calm them down. I look forward to hearing from many of you!!!
If you read the label, I would bet money the primary ingredient is collagen protein. It's made from hooves and such. It's an incomplete protein, the bioavailability index is really low, and you aren't absorbing that much of it.
It's best to stick with a high quality whey protein isolate.

M1 -24; M2 -21; M3 -19; M4 -21; M5 -13; M6 -21; M7 -10; M8 -16; M9 -10; M10 -8; M11 -6; M12 -5.
Just throw that **** away - all of that collagen-based protein is CRAP! Most of it produced in China with detectible levels of arsenic and lead.
You need to find a 100% whey protein isolate powder/shake. It's the best protein for our bodies post-op as it's the most easily absorbed (an even bigger issue for RNYers) and a high quality that ensures you're actually getting the amount of protein it says on the label.
Protein "blends", "concentrates" or anything with collagen is not going to fit the bill.
Congrats and welcome to the losers bench. I am not as young as you, and I am Type II diabetic, and it looks like you have type 1, but I have had great success with the RNY controlling my diabetes. I was insulin dependent and my A1C was 8.8 about 2 weeks after surgery. I had blood work done on 11/11/2015, just 3 months after surgery and my A1C was 4.9. I stopped all diabetes medication when I went on the liquid diet a week before surgery.
I don't have a sweating problem at all. I did before surgery, I was always hot, but now I am always cold. I've lost a total of 100lbs in the last year, and some people will say it's because I am not as insulated, but I think it's got more to do with my caloric intake being low.
Good luck to you, I hope that you have much success and that the journey helps to either put your diabetes into complete remission like me, or that you are able to cut back to as little medication as possible.
