Hi all. Just beginning my journey to good health. Starting at 223 lbs (5'2"). I'm 54. Someone actually said to me the other day: "Why do you want to have WLS? Aren't you too old for that?"

Hmmm, why does the better health, both physically and mentally, that comes with WLS have to belong to only the young.? And why is 54 considered old...geez.

Anyway, I'm glad to have found this website. My RNY is scheduled for 6/1/2016. I'm working my way through all the pre op requirements for my Insurance. My Surgeon was kind enough to give me a surgery date prior to Insurance approval so I can arrange my work schedule and time off.

I'll be diligently reading all the great information here to learn as much as I can from people who have been through RNY surgery.

Cleaned out my pantry and frig this past weekend. Good bye junk food. Working on kicking my Diet Coke with lime habit. Tracking my food and trying to chew more, practice sipping, getting more water in each day, increasing my protein intake and starting some regular exercise.

Any other suggestions for pre op readiness would be most appreciated!

Welcome to the site. I was on here before in 2008 before I had lap band surgery, but that didn't work out for me. Now I'm waiting on ins approval for RNY. I'm scared and nervous about another surgery but I know I can't live like this anymore. I will take my chances. Talking and getting opinions helps. It's nice to have someone to talk to about anything your feeling or worried about. Good luck with your upcoming surgery. You must be ecstatic!!

With improved health it is not pushing the envelope to expect to live to 100.  So look at this as 46 years of good health and enjoying life without the excess weight.

Take a piece of paper and draw a vertical line across it.  Mark zero at one end and 100 at the other.  Then put marks to represent every ten years.  Now think take the first twenty years and label it school and college.  The next twenty or thirty are marriage and child rearing.

The years left are the ones that belong to you and are controlled by you.  Your best years are ahead.  Enjoy your new health and enjoy those years.

Real life begins where your comfort zone ends

Welcome aboard!  If your friends consider you too old for WLS then I am prehistoric.  I am 65 1/2 yo and just had my RNY 5 weeks ago.  We are never too old to get healthy.  Unfortunately, because of lousy insurance I could never have surgery prior to when I did, nor could I afford to self-pay.  Medicare has been my saving grace!

67 yrs old, 4'10", BMI 31.8 (51.8 at start), HW 256.4 (8/4/15), SW 217.4, CW 152.8 (4/30/18), GW 125.0, RNY 12/4/15 Dr. RoseMarie Jones, Breast Cancer DX 2/16, Bi-lateral mastectomy 8/9/16.

Hello, I am an old timer I had RNY in 2003 and have maintained best thing I ever did for myself. If there is anything I can help you with please feel free to contact me. It sounds like you are doing great! I stopped the diet coke and sugar about 6mo before to make the transition easier for me :)

Welcome. You've got a good amount of time before surgery to get a really good running start. That should help a lot.

Do lots of reading, and ask questions. We'll be glad to help.

Congratulations on your choice to get healthy. One thing I tried to do when I started out before my surgery was not to drink with my meals. It totally helped.
