when it rains it pours
Ended up in the ER again yesterday with severe stomach pain and it appears I have a bowel obstruction again. Two months ago to the day I had surgery for the same thing so here I sit in the hospital again waiting for my surgeon. This pain is ridiculous and even after being given a very strong pain killer I'm still in pain. I can't lay down because that makes it worse so I'm literally sitting on the edge of my bed trying to sleep sitting up
I'm am so stressed/mad/upset/disheartened with this whole situation. I started off great after my surgery losing the weight I wanted rather quickly but since Sept it's just been one thing after another. Gallbladder removed in Sept, bowel obstruction surgery in Nov, stricture (which I still haven't gotten fixed yet) in Dec and now this. When will it end? Will I be dealing with this stuff forever? Sorry to come here and post this but I just had to write my thoughts down and this is the easiest place to do that. Thank you all.
I have no experience with bowel obstructions, but I hope you feel better soon.

I'm so sorry you are experiencing all these problems!
Hang in there and try to just take one day at a time.

From what I understand, when we lose weight rapidly, it creates a lot of extra space for your organs to move around and that can cause any adhesions to get caught up in your small bowel. I have had three bowel obstruction surgeries, nine months apart. All of the obstructions were from adhesions (scar tissue that developed from other abdominal surgeries) that wrapped themselves around my bowel.
My last surgeon made the decision to not clean out the scar tissue. They usually cut away all of the adhesions they see. She thought that maybe I was too efficient at manufacturing scar tissue and that the excessive cutting was creating a bigger problem, (building new adhesions on top of my old adhesions). She cleared the bowel of any adhesions and simply pushed them aside. She also secured a few things with stitches so they couldn't move around as much. So far I have not had any more issues. It's been a few years since my last surgery.
Then pain from a bowel obstruction is excruciating and unmistakable. Hang in there!
Thanks everyone. Was admitted last night and just finally got a room. I have a scope scheduled for tom and they will take care of the stricture and see how everything looks from the inside before they decide if they need to do surgery. My surgeon doesn't want to operate on me again for a 4th time unless he absolutely has to. At this point I don't care what he does to me as long as the pain goes away.
Just a quick little update. Still in the hospital and finally had my stricture dilated last night. Probably the most painful experience i've ever had when I woke up. Not sure why but it took a dose of dilaudid and a dose demorol before the pain was gone. They were only able to stretch it a little so I have to stay here until Friday and they will do the next one and hopefully I will be back to normal and eating normal again. Feel better today but I still had some pain after eating jello for lunch so I gotta take it slow. Wish me luck that I'm out of here as good as new by Friday night.
First off hugs to you....I had a colostomy done exactly 6 years ago today I wore that like a badge of honour for 4.5 years because it saved my life.....had my RNY done in July 2012 and I was getting ready to be discharged then the very next day was on my ass in bed totally exhausted....found out I had a leak....was then getting a blood transfusion and stayed in hospital for another 3 days...finally got home and all was fantasti****il....that October...I woke up that faithful morning and showered got dressed the normal things but then with no warning as I was going to have some breakfast I had this sudden onset of severe pain in my abdomen...went to my operating hospital and ended up in surgery for my FIRST hernia repair....stayed in hospital for a week and again went home was enjoying my new found life when in November of 2013 I woke up again feeling fine had my shower and bang this terrible pain is coming from my left side and it's making it hard for me to breathe...presented at my operating hospital again and again found out I had another hernia and it was strangling my colon so I had that repaired and was only in hospital for 3 days...went home enjoyed life up until September 2014 when I had my colostomy reversed...that was a pretty awesome time in my life as I never realized how much I missed NOT wearing a bag well that only lasted only almost 5 months as in February 2015 I woke up having excruciating pain like i've never ever felt before and I couldn't get away from this pain with nothing so when my boyfriend came home that evening I went to my local hospital and found out my entire colon was impacted and turning necrotic....here goes another surgery this time I had my colon totally removed and now live with an ileostomy ...I guess my point to all this rambling is that you never really know how many problems will arise while losing weight..most of my issues came to light since my RNY that being said I wouldn't change a thing because if any of these issues were to have happened when I was obese I don't think I would have survived any of these surgeries...I wish you all the best and just keep your eyes on the prize and know this too shall pass....hugs
