I had RNY surgery in April of 2010 and, like you, my mother was VERY against it. For me, this surgery was the last resort to reverse my many health issues (diabetes, sleep apnea, high cholesterol, high blood pressure and many joint/back/foot problems. I was taking 10 prescriptions and insulin, and now am on none of those things. I have maintained my weight loss (I lost 185) with the exception of 20 lbs. I am currently recovering from back surgery (3 weeks postop) and those 20 lbs will be gone as soon as I am recovered.
The only complication i had from wls was I developed a stricture about 2 months postop that was resolved with an upper endoscopy. I have had no other complications.
If you mother is insistent about this and has concerns, I suggest you take her with you during one of your appointments or, if you surgeon has one, a support group meeting for wls. As another reply stated, this procedure is completely different than it was 22 years ago. Everyone has horror stories or has the "I have a friend, who has a cousin who had it and had this or that problem" but you really need to make your mom understand that this is your decision. Good luck!
