Water still hurts!
Hi All,
5 weeks out from rny and doing pretty good. My weight loss has stalled but nurse says that is normal (this negative nelly gets a little freaked at this, but I will breathe). My real issue is siping the water -ouch! Warm, cold, icy- it all hurts when it hits my stomach. Why? I would love to know the science behind it AND how to fix it! I am very excited for next week's solid food phase!! I am thrilled I can eat veggies now - in tiny amounts- and loving all the seafood :)
Thanks!

Is it jus****er causing the pain, or other drinks? How about food?

I'd gladly split it with you!
If it's jus****er, it's likely an issue with the surface tension of the water. The water and fluid in your stomach react badly to each other, creating that discomfort. Think oil and vinegar in a bottle you have to shake.
You can add a surfactant to your water that changes the surface tension. Something like crystal light usually works for most people. Mio might. It should make most of the discomfort go away.
Or, you can just drink tea, or something light Powerade Zero. Or another zero calorie beverage of your choosing.
Don't drink tea within two hours of an iron supplement. The tannins in tea block absorption of about 80% of the iron.

Im amazed by what you know off the top of your head. The little "throw in" line about the iron supplement being blocked by the tea....I recently had some strange issues that, it turns out, were due to iron absorption....you know it so easily! Why dont the nutritionists know it and help us make a schedule before we have issues? Or, at least, they could have told me to research how supplements interact with each other. I had no idea it was even a potential issue.
Youre really helpful. Thank you.

Iron is best absorbed with citrus. Try taking your pill with a sip of OJ!

It's not the citrus that helps iron absorption, it's vitamin C itself. You should have about 200 mg of Vitamin C for every 30 mg of elemental iron. To get that much vitamin c from orange juice, you'd need about 16 glasses. At which point you'd be in a coma from all the sugar.

Thanks Grim. I didn't mean to imply that a few sips of OJ can replace the need for Vitamin C! But even a little bit is considered an "iron booster" and helps with the absorption.
