RNY 8 years out- need advice and help
Well, holding myself accountable daily. Had a great weekend. Need some help though. Using my Fitness Pal and trying to get the correct amounts of what I need. I have my protein set at 60 grams. Thinks it needs to be higher. Fats and Carbs? I am thinking carbs need to be under 30???? Any suggestions for those this far out in their journey? I am in need of shedding some 30 pounds. I have lost 8 and continue to maintain. I have ditched diet sodas and drinking water (and some coffee as I work and need not look zombie at 8 AM;))
ANY SUGGESTIONS ARE VERY WELCOME!
During my third year after surgery I gained 14 pounds in three months. I scheduled appointments with the surgeon and nutritionist.
I was told not to drink protein shakes. That is just drinking calories and contributes to the weight gain.
What works for me is counting calories. I need to log everything into My Fitness Pal. I am currently four pounds over my goal, but was eight pounds under in October.
I am starting the New Year with good food choices, daily weighing, and tracking and will need to keep calories at 900 to lose a pound a week.
You can also do the Atkins Induction plan for 2 weeks. That results in at least 10 pounds down. Be sure to use fiber and stool softener if you do Atkins. Otherwise the constipation can be horrible.
The bottom line is to lose weight you have to control calories. High protein with exercise and low carb is great, but only reducing calories will reduce your weight.

Great post. I'm 10 pounds over the weight I maintained for 5 years and 14 over my low. I've recommitted this New Year to get that off and hold myself accountable. I use myfitnesspal to log also. I think because of my height, I allowed myself to gain far more than I ever imagined I would. I am 6 years and 2 months out. I agree. Counting calories is crucial for my success along with daily exercise even if for 30 minutes per day.

Only two years out here -- so I am not a vet nor an expert. Here's what works for me in having logged over 700+ days in MyFitnessPal. For weight loss: less than 950 calories, more than 80 grams of protein, less than 35 grams of carbs and more than 65 oz of water. No added sugar, few fruits, no juices, no liquid calories and lots of dense protein. I do not drink diet soda but I do have a coffee addiction. I drink at least 3 to 4 cups a day in addition to my water. To maintain, I do basically the same thing but allow 200 to 300 more calories. I begin to gain if I am at more than 1200 calories or over 50 grams of carbs.

If you're limiting your calories and eating lots of protein the rest takes care of itself. Even carbs will be low.

What Spencerella said. If you are doing very low calories, high protein, the rest will fall into line. And if you are getting protein from meat, fat comes along for the ride. It's no big deal from my perspective. Extra fat will keep the cravings away, extra carbs will cause cravings.
