Overeaters Anonymous?
Does anyone go? I'm coming to realize I have a serious problem. I am trying really hard, but I keep screwing up. Everyday I fail again.
There is a local chapter of OA and I think I'm going to go next Monday to their new members meeting.
Anyone have experience? I've never done a 12 step program, so honestly I have no clue what to expect. Also, I think I have a problem with over spending.

I've never been; but I have gone and do go to bariatric counseling with a psychologist. She can also teach how to meditate which helps get through those moments. I think it's great that you have recognized what's going on and you are being aggressive in fixing it. I am proud of your choice and I'd go with you if I could!
Try OA, but make sure your surgeon knows what is happening, they may have additional resources to help you. You are only 4 months out - You are not the only one struggling to make all the necessary changes.

This is a journey, and we do have to deal with our head stuff along the way. That is part of why I come here almost daily... keep my had where it needs to be. I spent a lot of time in OA years ago. Like any group some of the dynamics will depend on the people in the group. If you decide to go, hopefully you will find it helpful.

I attended OA somewhere around the same era I drove 60 miles to a place called "Weight Loss Clinic" that educated me a fresh apple was a better food choice than a piece of apple pie. NYMom is so right; it depends on dynamics of the group; it could be powerful or a bust. What do I remember from OA? It was in an Alano building for all sorts of addictions--alcohol, drugs, gambling. I remember the smell of ashtrays everywhere overflowing with dozens of cigarette butts--transfer addiction heaven. I am now more selfish with my time and money. Personal one-on-one therapy seems to be pretty good bang for your buck. I value regular attendance at a local WLS support group. This site is the best deal ever.
OA AND FOOD ADDICTS have phone meetings. You can find them online. I have a corded phone that has a really loud speaker and sometimes if I am having a stressful day I will put it on usually while I am doing something like making dinner or cleaning the house. I totally agree that it depends on who is on and who is being real. You can definitely gain knowledge and encouragement. I think food addicts seem to have more interesting meetings without being drawn out. This forum is wonderful but sometimes it is nice to HEAR someone sharing their struggles and victories. Part of my surgery is that I am required to attend so many meetings with a psychologist and my nutritionist after surgery. I think this will be so beneficial. I do not want to fall by the wayside with that old emotional eating. I was able to lose 40 lbs before my surgery and used all these tools to do it. Please do not be so hard on yourself. You can do this. You just need to find out why you are making the choices you are making and find the right tool to work for you so you make the choices you want to.
