Fast Surgery Date!! & Ex-smokers
Hello!!
Hope everyone had a great holiday! I found out on Christmas Eve that my insurance approved my RNY Gastric Bypass surgery within a 24 hour submission! I will be going in for surgery in 15 days!! January 12th is the start of my new life and my new chapter !! :) Thankfully I only have to do 7 days liquid diet but I will probably stretch it to 10 days just to be sure! anyone had issues with being a former smoker post op? I quit October 8th but had the occasional cigar in the beginning of December and yes I did inform my surgeon of that. Just curious as to how former or ex smokers fair during recovery?
TIA!
Sarah

Having quit smoking 1.5 yrs ago, I didn't have a problem with my surgery. My surgeon requires the patients to be smoke free at least 6 mos. prior to surgery.
67 yrs old, 4'10", BMI 31.8 (51.8 at start), HW 256.4 (8/4/15), SW 217.4, CW 152.8 (4/30/18), GW 125.0, RNY 12/4/15 Dr. RoseMarie Jones, Breast Cancer DX 2/16, Bi-lateral mastectomy 8/9/16.
I quit in 2012, but I had smoked for 23 years. I didn't have any issues.
Also, my mom has copd, and has had multiple surgeries. She had been lucky enough to avoid complications.
Just make sure you get an incentive spirometer and use it regularly. My surgeon sent one home with me a week before surgery and had me use it preop.
Ask for one of they don't offer.
Thanks everyone! The receptionist at my surgeons office called me back ad said she couldn't find where he said only 7 days clear liquids so she said to start today... This is nerve wracking but I am beyond excited and ready :) went to the gym last night and busted out 2.8 mile jog to calm my anxiety down lol
