Prioritizing appearances vs. fitness (my own and my dog's)

Life is balance. None of us can afford everything we'd like. Sometimes you just have to make tough choices. Heck, we're all here because we had to choose between eating way too much every day and having surgery.

You can't have everything. Where would you keep it?

What is the purpose of having a trainer? Have you not learned any routines you can follow on your own? Or do you need the accountability of him waiting for you (so you are less likely not to go)? Personally I would not pay for the trainer or doggie daycare (way too much money even if I were not saving for plastics), but that is me. We all get to make our own choices.

I cut back on everything when I was saving for plastics. I knew I needed the skin gone for my mental health.

Find a local dog park or go on hikes with your dog where he can roam off leash(if he is trained to not run away).

Have you tried shopping at Aldi? I introduced my roommie to Aldi. She went from spending 100/month on food to 40/month on food.

Can you carpool?

What about joining a fitness class? Or GROUP personal training? it's usually much cheaper. Look up local bootcamps that meet at a park. There are affordable exercise options!

I wish there was an Aldi in my area! I shopped there all the time through college and after until I moved to the west coast. I get a good deal on my gym membership through work, and the classes are free. I'm really motivated for cardio, but I never push myself as far with strength training as my trainer has. But yeah, I think that's the decision -- I'll stop seeing her and just go it alone after my contract is up, and the pooch can start going to camp every other week once the weather's better.

Do you know the difference between a wish and a goal?  It is the same thing, except that the goal has a date attached to it.

I saw the plastic surgeon on the first anniversary of my surgery.  I had been at goal then for six months.  His recommendation was that I should be at a weight that I never intended to go either ten pounds higher or ten pounds lower than.

That was in October and he put me on his schedule for the following February, which was his first opening.

What I would advise you to do is put dates on your wishes.  First give yourself a deadline to reach your "forever" weight.  Research plastic surgeons and schedule consultations.  Set a reasonable date for your plastic surgery savings to be achieved.  Look into making a loan from your 401K.  If you do that, also make it a priority to get it paid back.

Accomplishing a goal starts with knowing all the facts, figures and dates.  It always involves prioritizing and planning.

For me, weight loss surgery gave me back my health and plastic surgery gave me back my self-esteem.

Thank you so much for the input, everyone. I honestly expected a lot of replies along the lines of "your fitness is more important than how you look" (especially because my husband has been critical and judgmental every time I mention a plan for plastics), but I'm glad to know that others think it's a worthy goal. I'll stop seeing my trainer once my contract is up, and by then I should have plenty of routines written down anyway. Then once the weather's better and the dog can get more weeknight walks, I'll cut back to every other week for day camp. Having Christmas over with should definitely help the savings too!

See if you can split the personal trainer with another person. I do this with MY personal trainer AND my figure skating coach. Thus, my persoanl trainer is 10 bucks and hour versus 20. While I am grateful to the person I am splitting him with....sometimes she annoys me. She swears at him when something is hard or hurts her (kind of like "Oh **** Oh **** You are an asshole for making me do this"). Other times she doesnt always come with her A game on. I am paying 1/3 of my take home salary for him so I come ready to work..

Consider group classes (i.e body pump, step, tae bo) instead of a personal trainer.

Could your pet go to some kind of group day camp?

401k contribution - if you are already getting the max match, I would not increase contribution above that until I had plastics paid for.  But I would be aggressive with every penny.  There is this Financial Peace University program that costs about $100 that goes over the budget and helps people get real about their finances. ((Dave Ramsey from TV/radio puts it on.)  I took it at a local church.  It makes it easier to say 'no.'

A good trainer should be working with you to get to self-efficacy, so make sure your trainer knows that this is your goal.  After a year training, you should no longer be clueless.
