30 pounds down but feeling really ill
Hi,
I am now 4 weeks post op, but not doing so great. I woke up this morning with bad nausea, sweats, diarrhea, and dizziness. It was so bad I thought I was going to need an ambulance.
My symptoms are nausea, chills, sweats, diarrhea, dizziness, a rushing of blood to the head when I walk or move to much. I have been having these all throughout the day today. In general I just feel sick!!
Yesterday I had protein shake with berries mixed in, mashed potatoes from shepherds pie with a bit of meat and green beans. Then a kureg Campbell's soup, and of course sipped on water in between.
today I had broth, water, sugar free Kool aid, no sugar added tangerines, potato soup.
Has anyone ever experienced anything like this?
i apologize if it's TMI!
Sounds like a stomach bug. I'd stop by the urgent care or give your doc a call, you may need fluids due to dehydration.
And on another note, why is your doctor/nutritionist letting you eat so much fruit, potatoes, etc this soon after surgery? If this is part of his/her nutrition plan, I'd sue for malpractice... you need proteins and healthy fats right now, not carbs. "No sugar added" tangerines does not mean "no sugar".
There's also a small chance all those carbs are causing reactive hypoglycemia, which could conceivably lead to all those symptoms... although not usually for an entire day.

surgeons having their own opinion about diet progression is not malpractice.
You are right. Opinions are not malpractice. But harmful medical advice unsupported by science, evidence and ASMBS best-practices is.

But I suppose I should point out the word "if" is also important here... are these foods on her early diet list? Or is this stuff she chose to eat herself? It may not be her doctor's fault.
FYI one serving of Del Monte Mandarin Oranges no-sugar-added is 12 g carbs... plus (and I didn't know this until I looked it up) 4g sugar alcohols. That will give one diarrhea if one is sensitive to such things.

the ASMBS guidelines are simply that " guidelines" no surgeon is required to follow them if he disagrees with them. There are many "guidelines" in medicine that every doctor hs the right to use or not. It is still not malpractice.
And yes, if those are on her list or she is simply eating them ,is certainly a concerN.
Hello All
thank you you for your replies.
Please let me assure you..I am not shoving sugar, meat, and potatoes into my body 24/7...
when I woke up sick, I did not consume anything bu****er until the late afternoon, when my husband came home and made me chicken broth (1 oz,) and gave me a few ( 4 pieces) or the tangerines.
Later in the night I had some cheesy potato soup (4 oz.)
Soft potatoes are on my list, as is potatoe soup, the meat was hamburger cooked for a while but I chewed chewed and did not eat much, probably not enough to measure.
thanks.
Hamburger is tough on a lot of people. You'd think that because it's ground, it would be easier. But it's crappy, tough meat, gristle, etc. I could eat steak easier than hamburger for quite a while.

Are you getting enough protein? Your plan for yesterday did not seem like enough. Something to check. You could be getting the flu, unrelated to WLS unless you are not getting enough protein.

UPDATE
Sooo..I went to see my PCP and was sent to the ER at my surgeons request. I ended up being dehydrated, not sure how since I sip sip all the time. I received fluids, vitamins, and some anti-nausea meds.
There is a nasty stomach bug going around, they suspect I may have caught that, but not sure. I followed up with my surgeon the next day and they are testing me for E. coli and c-diff, and to top it off I caught a sore throat/cold.
The last few days have been rough, cannot ea****er bothers my stomach and throat, just miserable.
I am looking for the sun through all this rain!!
