The nutrients and calories get absorbed in the intestines after they leave the pouch.

Yeah, I was just wondering, how would we get full from our protein shakes?

Right after surgery water and protein shakes can give the sensation of fullness because there is so much swelling in the new stomach.  Once that heals, then liquids will not make you feel full.  Protein shakes are good right after surgery because you cannot eat solids for while.

Every surgeon has their own plan to have you transition back to regular foods.  I was on liquids only whi*****luded protein shakes for two weeks.  I could only drink an ounce or two at a time for the first week.  By the end of the second week I could drink eight ounces of shake or water at a time.

Oh thanks for clarifying! My doc has phases, clear liquid, liquid, purée, soft, Reg. He says by the time I get discharged I'll be phase 2. Also there is no ice chips, water, or cotton swabs/sponges to wet my lips or mouth until  I pass an upper GI 24 hrs post surgery.

I was like that - I was soooo dry that I liked the barium drink they gave me - and I was sooo dry I had to drink 2 of them.   The nurses were great - they gave me stuff to drink as soon as I got back to my room.

I'll add this... you kind of want to lose the eating to feel full idea if you can... some days you will... some days you will feel like a bottomless pit... just plan, portion, eat and move on, full or not.

In regards to the incisional pain, mine rotated first it was the one on the lower right, then upper left, it seemed just when one area started to subside another would hurt, it took about 3-4 weeks until I felt better.

Even well after surgery it takes 10-20 min for fluids to trickle through most pouches.   That is based on studies of radioactive liquid going through for people well after surgery.  That is why they want you to sip, sip, sip, not gulp, gulp, gulp your fluids.  If you are sipping, you need to sip alot to get 64oz of fluid a day in.

I am a year out and protein shakes still fill me up.
