Water is making my stomach hurt.

I am 13 days post RNY and cannot tell if I am hungry or full.  Water is causing some discomfort.  It may be gas.  What should I do?

The nerves in your stomach were cut and it will probably be months before you can feel hungry or full.  Sip water slowly and also see if lukewarm water goes down easier than ice water.

Follow the plan that your surgeon gave you and keep sipping so that you do not get dehydrated.

You may be drinking too fast.  Take tiny sips; try drinking room temperature or warm.  When I had my surgery, only warm liquids were tolerable for the first couple of weeks.

Good luck.

And you will know when you are full.  It's the same feeling as when you ate way too much on Thanksgiving :)

As White Dove said, it will be a long time before you can tell hungry or full. Measure your portions, and don't try to go by feel. Going by feel is what got us morbidly obese to begin with.

The discomfort from water could be several things. One that isn't discussed often is the surface tension of water. Many stomachs have a layer of acidity that reacts badly to plain water. It's like mixing oil and water. Changing the temperature of water changes the surface tension, and can make drinking easier.

Adding crystal light or other products acts as a surfactant, which also changes the surface tension, and allows easier drinking. Many people who have trouble with water can drink other liquids ok, like milk, protein shakes, tea, etc, because the surface tension has already been altered.

Try different liquids, different additives, different temperatures. You'll find some combination that works.

You have gotten good advice. Just sip slowly and only a little at a time. By 6-12 months out (can't remember exactly when), I was able to drink like I did pre-op, but it did take a while. Hang in there!!
