Hello....I am 3 weeks post RNY. I am on the puree stage. Does anyone count calories at this stage? What about fat? What would be an appropriate goal to stay under for calories and fat intake?

This early in the game I don't worry about calories or fat.  My concern is getting at least the daily 60 grams of protein that is required, and very low surgar.  Calories will come later.

I started tracking right after surgery, and still do. I use MyFitnessPal, and it keeps track of everything. All I really cared about was the calories. Protein was the focus; I never worried about fat; and if protein was high and calories low, carbs were going to be low also.

It's easier to get into yhe habit of tracking now, because you are eating very little, and not much variety. You can add in new foods as you progress with very little extra effort.

I don't see how calories can be anything but good only 3 weeks out since we are only getting 2oz of food (protein) per soft food meal.  Am I wrong?

Time goes by quickly, and calories pile up even quicker. Part of the reason we hit morbid obesity is because we were eating too much, and far more than we thought we were. This is the ideal time to start keeping track of what we put in our mouths. We need to learn what a proper portion is, how much protein and carbs we are taking in, etc. Aside from the surgery itself, weighing, logging and tracking everything i have eaten is easily the second best thing I have done. I would not be nearly as successful as I have been without tracking calories, strictly, honestly, and scrupulously. There is no better time to start than today.

Calories are NOT good for us right after surgery. We don't need ANY calories. We are carrying around a year's supply on our bellies and butts. We need protein, because the only extra protein we have is in our muscles, and our bodies will break muscle down to get what it needs. We need calcium, or our bodies will brwak down our bones to get enough. We need a little fat, because we won't function right without it. And we need vitamins and minerals, since we don't manufacture those. But we NEED zero carbs or calories, as long as we have a large reserve.

Every unnecessary calorie we eat in those first months after surgery is one more calorie we'll have to lose further on down the road. Better and easier to lose it sooner rather than later.

Great explanation...thanks!  So for now, practice makes perfect for later down the road.

^^^  What Grim said

I was cleaning out some drawers yesterday and found my records of my first two years of menu's and calorie/protein counts.  I began by keeping a record in a lined notebook before graduating to Myfitnesspal.

Keeping a record from the beginning sure made it easy to keep track of what I ate plus my water consumption and vitamin intake.

I credit daily food planning and recording with keeping me on the straight and narrow

Good luck

I'm pretty new to the game but I'm tracking calories, protein, and carbs.  If nothing else, I'm assuming its forming good habits for later.  Cant hurt (unless you begin to limit protein in an effort to reduce carlories....dont do that).

I am 10 days out and I am tracking everything in MYFitnessPal. Even my water. I adjusted the goals so I am sure to get 60gm of protein a day, and even set the carbs to a lower goal than the default. I changed my calories as well, even though I am not coming close at this point. I like being able to pull up my total protein and carbs, not just calories for the day.

Like Grim said - I want to get in good habbits now. I feel like if I wait, when I need it I just wont want to be bothered by it -- and for me that will be a slippery slope.

Everything Grimm said! My fitness pal was the best tool that I ever used (and still use religiously). Keep track of EVERYTHING that you put in your mouth, it is a good habit and visual reminder of what you have consumed. Your doctor will ask and it is just easier to have it logged then to try and remember or guess at it. Starting the habit of logging everything now we come in handy in the long run! Best of luck
