Tylenol for pain
hi everyone,
i had gastric bypass surgery five days ago and have been doing really well overall. today i ran out of my pain medication and all i could find was children's tylenol...i took the dose for a child and it relieved my pain...BUT for the last hour or so i have been having really sharp gas pains. i think this might be because the children's tylenol has high fructose corn syrup in it. have others had this experience?
thanks!

Hi,
Welcome! I am only a few months ahead of you, so I will share with you what I did. I stopped my pain meds the 4th day post surgery. Walking is what I used as a pain reliever. I was very fortunate that this worked for me, as I hated the effect of pain meds on my central nervous system.
I always call my surgeons office, as instructed, before I put any new medicine in my body. Being this new to recovery, I would strongly encourage you to treat your new pouch as very delicate right now. It will take your insides twice as long to heal as it does your outside.
Come here often, research as much as you can. I have favorite mentors I trust here, and I hope you find some as well. That is the true miracle of all. That those persons who've come before us, share their expertise to help our journey proceed smoothly.
Good luck in your great journey ahead.
I was off my prescription pain med on the 2nd day after surgery. I took two doses of Walgreen's Extra Strength Adult Liquid Pain Reliever (store brand version of liquid Tylenol). It took care of any pain. There was nothing sweet about this stuff, it tasted like whiskey. I didn't take any more after the 2nd dose as I had no more pain.

I had (and sometimes still have) crazy bouts of gas pain. I mean, knock you on your behind, you aren't going to be able to do anything until this pain goes away, I think I may be having a heart attack because how on earth could gas hurt this much, bouts of gas pain. I even went to a cardiologist to make sure the crazy pain in the middle of my chest wasn't heart related -- nope, gas pain.
Moving does help, but get yourself a giant box of gas-ex. Personally, I like the chewable kind because it's easier to take in an emergency. I have some in my purse, some hidden in my living room, some in my nightstand upstairs, and some in my desk at work. I take one and if I don't feel better in 30 minutes I take a second. You can take up to 4 in a 24 hour period.
I doubt you were dumping (I assume that's what you were asking) on children's tylenol, but get yourself some grown-up tylenol anyway. Dumping is a cornucopia of symptoms that isn't the same for everyone, but is way worse than gas pains. When it happens, you will know, and will immediately understand why it is such an effective deterrent.

I found even adult liquid Tylenol gave me gastric discomfort. My knees are very bad and still need help there and just bought a pill crusher and grind up one extra strength Tylenol and put it a half jogger of water and toss it down. I follow that with some more water to get the taste out of my mouth. I have found that even this smaller dose works well enough to allow me to walk. I was given Tramodol for pain management when I came home as I has four surgeries including an open incision due to complications. But I'm off of it now.
