Home for the holidays, mom wants food suggestions?

I'll be going back home for the first time in 2 years this Christmas. My mom is the type who shows her love with food and is getting herself all worked up because she's worried my post-VSG husband and I won't have anything to eat while we're there. I've tried to explain to her that we can eat "normal" food, but we'll likely just aim for the protein and skip carby sides. But she keeps texting me pictures of things from the grocery store and asking if she should get them for us. Is there anything SIMPLE I can tell her to get or any easy way to describe what we can and can't eat other than "high protein/low carb"? Even though we'll have a rental car and could easily get our own groceries for 5 days, not feeding us just isn't an option in her mind. What can I say to make her feel helpful and prepared without stressing out so much?

This is too funny.  Weird how people react.  I have the same issue at work for work lunches.  They tend to order sandwiches so they order me a salad...but with no protein!  I try to explain it would be almost better if they got me a roast beef sandwich with let, tom and onion because then I can at least create a protein based salad...they keep thinking vegetarian when it's the opposite.  Tell her MEAT and VEGETABLES.  As long as there is meat and veggies not mixed with pasta...we're fine!  It's really quite simple, right?

It's really far simpler than she's trying to make it! It certainly makes me realize where I inherited my tendency to have to invent things to stress out over if none are present on their own.

My husband said to tell her we can eat "normal food," but I had to remind him that what's "normal" to him may not be what's normal in Casserole-ville, Ohio, lol.

Inventing things to stress over?  Sounds like you grew up Lutheran, too.  I grew up on Lutheran potlucks where casseroles were called hotdishes and cream of mushroom soup was considered the "nectar of the gods."  Here's an example of what a normal plate would look like at one of them:  rice hotdish, cheesy potatoes, CoolWhip salad w/ Snicker chunks, and a mint-frosted brownie.

Are you sure you aren't talking about Catholics?  Because you just described a basic Catholic potluck except you left out the strawberry pretzel cool whip "salad", the layered taco dip and sausage and peppers...

Us Irish Catholics -- meat and potatoes. Don't let them touch on the plate. On sundays and holidays there would be rolls, too.

My mom also shows her love with food, so I have her get things like chicken sausages, turkey meatballs, poached salmon, cottage cheese, salmon cakes.  That way she feels like she is "providing" food for me, but she understands the type of stuff I eat.  She also watches me like a hawk and comments on how little I eat (but occasionally comments on how much!).  I hate being under the watch of the food police, but hey, I suppose no matter how old we are, we will always be their babies.

It's sure revealing as to where so many of our psychological issues around food came from!

Chicken sausages? Turkey meatballs? It's like I don't even know you any more.

Grim - this made me laugh so hard!!! I know your red meat loving self is horrified by my meat choices. I eat a lot of bacon. Can we still be friends?
