Very irritated with weight loss Doctor
Do you mind if I ask was your neuropathy something you got after weight loss surgery? The reason I ask is I have this dull pain and numbness in my right arm and shoulder ever since my surgery which I had about four months ago. I have had pains before but never lingering this long and this bad. I've been waiting it out to see if it resolves itself. I'm afraid my PCP will dismiss me if I go and see him about it. And I know the surgeon won't have a clue. All he does is have you come in every few months to bill you and or your insurance for an office visit. He doesn't really want to be bothered with issues.

I'm sorry, I just now saw this reply for some reason!
Yes, the neuropathy came AFTER WLS. I didn't have any co-morbidities except for GERD pre-op. About 3 months out from surgery, my toes and fingers went sort of numb, but not really... they're painful, like when they're extremely cold, but they're not. It doesn't ever go away, it is constant. It is difficult to zip zippers, open water bottles, anything that take small motor movement and/or gripping from your fingertips. To protect my toes I've been wearing steel toe boots.
My GP ruled out a deficiency (which we all thought it MUST be due to the timing of it) and sent me on to the neurologist. an MRI and lots of little shock and poke tests in his office and he never found a cause. He's got me on neurontin now which should start to work any day just to fix the symptoms, but I'd love to know the cause!
Nothing in my arm or shoulder though. that sounds like a pinched nerve or something. Good luck!
Ok thanks. I was just wondering because my problems didn't start until right after surgery so I'm assuming it was caused by the surgery somehow. I have diabetes but I never got diagnosed with any neuropathy or other complications. It probably is a nerve or maybe some type of carpel tunnell. I hope they can fix it. It hurts pretty bad and my right side is my dominant side so I need it to work right!
I developed Raynaud's Syndrome after surgery, which sounds a lot like what you describe. There isn't a cure, but I take a daily dose of DHA, which has really helped stop the progression of the disorder.

I understand your irritation! My surgeon sees you for all types of stuff so this seems very strange to me. But hopefully your GP was able to help you.

I have to admit that I was completely impressed with the nurse practitioner. I explained my surgery, how much I've lost and my symptoms. She ordered labs that seemed to cover just about everything we should cover. I'll know the results early next week. She even pulled my labs from June and said I was borderline anemic.
Ok ladies, You have had a surgery to impair your absorbtion. It has worked! You are well into weight loss and the issues that come with surgery.
You need to know your body and you are just learning. Be very careful to get these in balance as they can cause long term bone loss and heart function issues with the electric issues in the heart. Here are my leg cramp tips...I have had lower and upper front and back of legs and hand cramps, abdominal all. Catch it early, and you need less intervention. Make sure you take your suppliments. Muscle cramps are usually caused by low potassium and low magnesium. both can be quickly reversed if you know what your body is low on. for a long time mine were caused by potassium loss, one half cup of dill pickle juice will stop them or one serving of no salt (serving as per the label instructions) in one ounce of coffee/ hot tea will work in just a few minutes..if it is low potassium.
If it is magnesium... I keep magnesium tablets, available across the counter...3-4 depending on if my legs are just aching, or if in full cramp mode...again with warm liquid, to start melting and absorbtion. If legs in full cramping mode a hot pad, or hair dryer will also give temporary relief of cramps. Be sure to get all your minerals including Boron, magnesium, calcium and D3, zinc.. all are needed to absorb properly, any lack of any ONE and the others will go out of balance and not be used properly.
I had a hybrid open WLS surgery, 20 years ago and did not have insurance for 14 of thsoe years. I had to get smart or die. Do your research. Do not depend on your food for vitamins, most are depeleted due to commercial fertlizers, eat organic if you can so nutrients will be available. Hope these tips help you to find and maintain your levels
