Very irritated with weight loss Doctor

I called in this morning to let him know about horrible leg pains/cramps that are getting more intense and frequent. Some kind people on here suggested electrolytes being off. Low potassium. Low magnesium. I asked if he could order labs. He told me to go see my GP. The problems I am having are due to my weight loss. I truly feel that this falls under his scope of care. Very frustrated. On my way to GP now. I hope they know what all to look for.

I never said it would be easy. I said it would be worth it.

I received the same treatment! When I did get into to see the nurse practitioner after almost losing consciousness, she told me the leg pain was caused by crossing my legs too much, which is absurd! I can tell the difference between the pain I was having and the kind of pain caused by crossing my legs. I figured out on my own that I was not taking enough B-12. My GP would have been completely useless, so I hope you have a better one.

By chance, was your "crossing your legs too much" a diagnosis given at 4:30 p.m. on a beautiful Friday afternoon?  That would have been an office-call charge worth requesting the clinic to write off as a waste of everybody's time.

It wasn't, but that would have made more sense! I thought about complaining, but didn't bother because I already hit my out of pocket maximum so it didn't cost me anyway. Well that is after I called to complain that their statement didn't match the one from my insurance company, so I guess I did complain because they tried to charge me even though they were not supposed to.

I refuse to see the NP at my primary care doctors office.  Honestly, she had to pull out a book to figure out which antibiotic to give me for a UTI, and then she prescribed the wrong one.  They called me a week later and told me to stop taking the one she prescribed and to take another one instead.

So, I've told them repeatedly said no they've asked if I wanted to see her because the doctor was booked up.  I'll gladly wait to get better care.

I haven't seen an actual doctor other than my surgeon, and I haven't seen him since my six week follow up. Oh, the benefits of having student insurance. I'm not sure if I actually have a primary care doctor because I am only able to see the nurse practitioner at student health services. She gives out referrals when she can't help, but it takes at least a month to get any appointment after receiving the referral!

Oh, that must suck!

This should remind those of us who have private health insurance to be grateful for what we have.

I hope you get it all worked out.

it really doesn't fall under his scope of care. He is a cutter. He'd did his cutting. That is all he knows how to do.

Most surgeons send post op patients on to their GP's.

I developed some issues in my fingers and toes at about 3 months post op, called my surgeon, just SURE he would know exactly what was wrong and what to do, and the office treated me like I was crazy for calling them. I was offended and angry at first, but after talking about it with my GP, she made me realize I'm probably lucky he didn't try to help me! Just like the poster above me said, my GP reminded me that he is a SURGEON. He does weight loss surgery, but the other things that go on with our bodies (whether they're related to our new body and our new diet or not) do not typically fall under his expertise. She referred me to a neurologist and we've since determined it's neuropathy and I'm working on treating that.

But yes- your surgeon isn't always the right person to call. I still call there FIRST when I Have an issue that I think is related to the surgery, just in case it's something common and simple and they can tell me, but if they refer me to my GP, I happily comply.

Best of luck getting your concerns taken care of. I know it can be frustrating.
