First year follow up
I had my scheduled one year follow up today. I have lost 170lbs and weigh 154.4lbs. My BMI is 22.7. Although I had a few bumps in the road, I feel that this surgery has saved my life.
Before:
- It hurt to walk
- I couldn't breath
- I couldn't sleep
- my body hurt everywhere
- my joints screamed at me with every movement
- I had diabetes with an A1C level of 6.8 to 8.3
- My blood pressure was through the roof 170\95
- They couldn't measure my cholesterol because my tryglycerides were too high.
- I had sleep apnea
- I was so depressed that I had to take meds to help me with being so sad
- I wanted to live, but at the same time wished I would die
- I wore 52x30 pants, size 4x sweats, and 3x shirts
- I couldn't see my man parts without the use of a mirror
- I could barely reach to wipe my own butt
- I struggled to tie my shoes and could not bend over and reach my toes
After:
- I find myself taking the stairs instead of the elevator
- I can cross my legs
- not only can I see my man parts, they are bigger and work much better than before
- my A1C is normal
- my blood pressure is 120/70
- my cholesterol is normal to low
- I am no longer taking depression meds
- No more cholesterol meds
- No more Metformin for Diabetes
- I am exercising regularly and look forward to taking walks with my wife and daughter
- I have taken up archery, so every 6 shots I have to walk 20yds each way whi*****ludes 6 steps down stairs and 6 steps back up with every trip. I am averaging 100-150 shots a day
- My upper body strength is improving greatly. I started out with an adjustible draw weight of 19lb on my daughter's youth bow that goes from 19 to 45lbs, and have moved up to an adjustible draw weight of 45lbs on my new adult bow. It goes up to 62lbs, so I have some room to improve still.
- My knees still hurt, but not so badly that it keeps me from doing what I want
- I am getting stronger every day and my stamina is greatly improved.
- I want to live
- I can work out in the field as a technician again. I am not strapped to a desk
- My family can finally stop worrying if I will wake up the next day
- No more sleep apnea
- I am wearing 31x30 pants and size small sweats. I am into a medium t-shirt
- My shoe size went down 2 sizes. from a 9wide to a 7 medium. I never expected that one.
Overall:
I am happy with my results. I had an infection right after surgery. That was painful, but it eventually healed up just fine. Three weeks ago I had to go in for emergency surgery. I had a hernia that my intestine was protruding through and kinked and twisted it to a point that things got completely backed up. Could have been real bad, but they got it fixed and I have lost another ten lbs in 3 weeks. I am guessing most of that was me being full of sh*t. Literally!
Would I do this over again? Absolutely. Would I recommend it for everyone? Absolutely NOT! You have to be in the right frame of mind and make a conscious decision that you are making a life change. I decided I was going to eat to live and not to live to eat. Eating is really not about enjoyment and comfort, it is about sustaining life so you can do and accomplish the things needed in every day life. That's it!
Thanks for reading, and I hope this can encourage someone who is undecided about their own life choices. Just know, it has to happen in your head first, then you'll lose the weight and you won't feel deprived.
Life is so much more than a box of chocolates!
Congratulations. You've done a great job.

Weigh to go Mike!! Hey, got a question. Some people who've had RNY, then get a hernia. But when they go in for surgery, for the hernia, the doctor will cut some of the loose skin at the same time for free...A bit of a tummy tuck. Did the surgeon cut some of your excess skin while he did the procedure? Brian
I had hernia/obstruction surgery with no excess skin removed. Tomorrow, I have a followup appointment and will ask why I didn't get a 2 for 1 surgery like you mentioned; maybe because the surgeon figured what I was going through was hellish enough or because it was an emergency surgery on a beautiful, warm Saturday morning and the surgical team wanted outta there fast.
Great post! Congratulations...
