Bowel Movement issues

I have recently had RNY surgery on November 10th, 2015 and everything is going great for the most part. My main concern is that I am having abdominal pain and have basically quit having any sort of healthy bowel movement over the past four days. Any suggestions? Protein levels are fine. Fiber is included in the shakes. Plenty of water. Just no trips to the bath room. On the plus side, I am down 48 pounds since October 26, 2015. Thats amazing. weight loss has slowed down to a crawl now, but still doing great.

After awhile I need to add more fiber to stay regular.  Sometimes I try a suppository, x-lax or enema.  But the abdominal pain could indicate a blockage.  Contact your doctor.

You and I have the same surgery date (I just had three more between Oct 26 and Nov 6 due to adhesions and strictures and did not come home until Nov 23rd). I had no problems with bowel movements until Friday when I became constipated and was only passing hard rabbit turds. Finally, today, passed large hard lump followed by lots of normal stool. This was about an hour after taking the colace I was sent home with. That is some nasty stuff removed from its capsule. Burns in the mouth even with water. I called my surgeons office and tomorrow if I'm still having difficulties, I will take a child's size dose of miralax. Do not worry about calling your surgeon if you have problems or questions. They are paid very well to take care of us. I feel very blessed to have an excellent team. They have been put to the test with me due to all the complications and have worked with my HR department so I am still getting paid even though I may not be able to return to wor****il around Christmas.

I take a capful of miralax daily to help me stay regular. Check with your doc. Good luck. Constipation is no fun, but hemhoroids (sp) are way worse!

This is easily the number one and almost universal complaint following surgery. In addition to the fiber, having more fat in your diet can make things easier.

Thank you everyone for the reply. I will contact my doctor tomorrow about his recommendation on a stool softener. I had no issues until four days ago.

How much is "plenty of water"?  The biggest culprit with constipation is not drinking enough fluids.  The minimum amount we should be drinking is 64 ounces.  I have to drink at least 120 ounces daily to keep me going.  I also take Benefiber ,twice daily, and 500 mg of magnesium.

We had a similar discussion a little while ago - except the complaint was a big solftball, not little rabbit turds.  (I'm LOLing I can hardly type).

I think you will enjoy reading this thread - you are NOT alone!!!

Completely normal;  keep stool softeners (OTC), Miralax (or the generic) and for the Big Gun:  good old Milk of Magnesia!

I've found that a cup of strong coffee in the morning, and taking a magnesia tablet daily, are both good ways to keep things moving.

We're all different, but the above suggestions seem to work for most of us.  Keep trying until you find one that works for you.
