Absolutely no restriction...I dont' thinksurgery worked
Hi all. I'm very concerned. I had gastric bypass surgery 3 weeks ago and recently started pureed food. The problem is 1/2 cup does nothing for me and have was able to eat 2 cups of pureed chili. I stopped there... but not because my pouch told me too.
I was the same way in the hospital after surgery. I could drink all my requirements within hours of waking up and able to get in all my fluids and protein during the two week liquid stage.
My pouch has never stopped me yet. I limit my potions because I don't want to do damage but I am concerned it will be the same when I advance to whole foods.
My question is has anyone else ever been able to eat as much as they want without feeling it in their pouch and how did things turn out?
TIA
Your pouch is still healing. Nerves were cut, as is normal, so you won't feel anything much in the way of your pouch feeling full. You can't rely on your pouch to tell you to stop. That is precisely the reason we are given certain amounts to eat at certain stages.
You will feel restriction once things have healed and you are on solids. You'll be amazed at how small portions make you feel full. There were a lot of times I could not get in a 1/2 cup of protein per meal when I was a few months out.
I guess I don't get how you would eat more than what you know you're supposed to eat. Meaning, how you can just ignore what you were told? You WERE told not to eat more than the portions given, right? Did the surgeon/his staff/ nutritionists or dieticians tell you what to expect? That was drilled into my head on many occasions over the months leading up to my surgery.
It never even occurred to me to try to eat more than the amount I was told to eat. I understood that my anatomy had been changed and I would not get "full" signals from my body so I knew I needed to not test my pouch limits. I just trusted what my surgeon and his team taught me and told me.
I woke up in between a memory and a dream...

Don't be judgmental. This has nothing to do with what you are doing or what you wouldn't do. She is saying she is eating more because she is feeling no restriction and in essence testing her restriction. There should be restriction at 3 weeks. Most have it on the day of surgery and forward.
I know exactly what she is experiencing. I had a revision from sleeve to bypass due to severe reflux. From the day of surgery on I had no restriction. I will be 3 months out next Friday. Every time I see a comment after someone says they have no restriction, people assume they aren't doing the right thing and start inputting their own experience and what they wouldn't or aren't doing.
She needs to call her doctor and let him or her inform her. I have an appointment to see my doctor next week and they are going to schedule a scope. Most people I've read about that have had a revision to bypass from the sleeve say they have much more restriction than with the sleeve. One said it's like the sleeve on steroids.
This post was from several years ago. Since then I have lost all my weight and some consider me to be underweight. I am 5'4" and fit a size 0, sometimes a child's 6x. To say the surgery was a success would be an understatement. This far out, I feel restriction. I get very full on small portions. My pouch fills up quick but it also empties quick. I follow a keto diet most of the time because my stomach likes it the most. If I eat something loaded with carbs, I feel ill. I'm sure this has contributed to my weight loss and maintenance as well.
Good luck to everyone in your journey. I hope everyone has the same success I have :)
Hey there Nakitah! I'm glad you came back to update this post! I've been having almost the same problem but I had a revision to (mini gastric bypass) ever since the first day out of surgery I've been in no pain nor ever had any restrictions to liquids or foods. And I've been trying so hard to look for a solution or any info if anyone had the same situation! I had my surgery done June 4th 2020. About 10 days ago. And I just never feel full and I Stop eating not because my stomach says to but because I don't want to pu**** to far...Ive really concerned about this lately and hopefully you can shed some light into my situation!? Congrats on the success! ?
Just came across this thread. It caught my eye because I have a similar concern. Had RnY on 9/8/20. I thought many of the responses were pretty harsh and uncalled for. Kind of like throwing someone an anchor when they really need a life preserver and some encouragement. My favorite post is your update on 3/6/20. Bravo! Hope I can follow in your footsteps.

You may think many of the responses were harsh or uncalled for, but in reality there are many of use on here who over the years have seen people eating tacos and grinders at only 3 weeks out. There has even been some folks who were rushed to the hospital for eating off plan and busted their staple line. Not following your doctors plan and pushing the limits does nothing but get you in trouble. People forget that they had a major surgery and things were cut which means nerves were cut and they don't grow back overnight.
I am so glad to hear your update! I had sleeve in 2013 and lost some weight with lots of hard work (diet and exercise) but never felt the restriction others did (aka the surgery didn't help as much as changing my behaviors--which I didn't need surgery to do!) . I have a mini bypass scheduled for June and terrified it will be more of the same since I've been told bypass is about malabsorption and not restriction. Can you PLEASE tell me what clicked and made this surgery successful for you???
