There is a study out there indicating that those on probiotics lose more after RNY. Not sure how seriously to take it, but I figure why not.

My dietitian recommended trader joe's brand, the one that is about $15 for 60. There are a lot of cheaper ones that are basically a waste of money. She also said to take it for two weeks and then take two weeks off.

Thanks for the info.  Wasnt sure how much is absorbed in our system after RNY?

I think,  and please someone correct me if I'm wrong,  but prebiotic aren't actually absorbed. They are a good type of bacteria that live in our digestive system and help to regulate everything.

Okay,  a follow up questions on this subject.  I'm taking antibiotics,  can I take the probiotics at the same time to help counteract what's happening in my gut, or should I wait until I'm done and then do it?  Any experiences with antibiotics and probiotics at the same time?

I do not have experience with this, but I would wait. The antibiotics kill the bacteria, so taking probiotics at the same time sounds self-defeating. I know that you are not supposed to drink a hot beverage with priobiotics because it kills them, so I would think the same reasoning applies.

I've always been told that's the best time to take probiotics (because antibiotics kill the good bacteria too).  I'm not a medical professional though. :)

I read and was told that taking probiotics while you take antibiotics is a waste of money. But stating taking probitics imidiately after antibiotics - in like 10 billion per pill -the really really good ones, is IMO Great idea.

While taking antibiotics - I always worry about yeast - Candida - I while I am taking antibiotics I watch for any yeast related symtoms and take that, or I take them (2 pills: 1 then another 3 days apart) starting on the last day of antibiotic.   I don't wait to get yeast infection. I know I am prone to them, so I always get Diflucan RX when doc prescribe any antibiotics. My gastro so very much agree with that ... But any Rd meds is Rx for a reason.. Diflucan or any other fungal meds can have some side effects - for me the benefits of that are worth the risk.

A couple of my friends Keep Diflucan on hand just for that reason.

I am also very susceptible to yeast.  I usually use a one day store bought treatment.  No problems so far, but I'm day 3 of long run of antibiotics, so I'm sure it will happen eventually.

The store bought works on the outside of the body. The RX pills kills the yeast in the body including the gut

Not that I advise anyone to do it, but I had been tested for Candida...and I had it.. So now when I see craving sugars, carbs..getting more allergy symptoms..(itchy head, skin) - I take Diflucan. I don't need to take that now more than every 2-4 months, or after anitibiotics treatment.. (1 or 2 times a year)

Read on Candida...

Pau d'arco tea is great to prevent - kill yelast/candidas.. Unfortunately- my gut hates it... Ugh..
