Osteopenia
I have a question maybe you might know about, I'm 50 years old going on 2 years I had my surgery and had my first Bone Density Scan today and they said I had some Osteopenia in a hip. I was told to increase my Calcium and Vit D I already take them. The Doctor told me to do some weight bearing exercises. I don't know if this is because of my absorbtion after surgery or I had it before. Do you think they can tell me how long this has been going on ? I'm 4'11 and have lost 100lbs. Thanks
I don't think there is any way to tell how long you've had it. The best plan is to have a bone density scan before surgery, as a baseline. But without that, you just don't know.
The 1500mg of calcium citrate is just a recommendation. Many people need more. Keep an eye on your labwork too. Calcium says nothing about your bones, but PTH will tell you if you are getting enough calcium. That number should be lower, not higher.

I'm in the same boat. I started taking Vitamin K2. I've been doing a little research and found out that K2 helps to deposit the calcium supplements we take in the bones and not in the soft tissue. They said that if you take a lot of Vitamin D3, you should also take K2 and if you take calcium supplements, you should be taking magnesium with it. Here is an article that explains it in easy to understand language. I'll let you know if it helps when I get my next DEXA scan.
I've been doing the same, since I was a little osteopenic. I should have my next DEXA scan next week. I'll let you know if it helps.

HI there!
There really is no way to know and a LOT of women who HAVENT had their inside rearranged are in the same boat as you.
Here are some exercises that will help bone density that arent all the traditional gym stuff (e.g. tai chi, raquetball, dancing).
