Hey guys, just wondering if you can or cannot take capsules after gastric bypass. Please respond.

The first month, I opened them and poured contents into applesauce (no sugar added).  I now swallow capsules. I first tried a small capsule (Omprezele-to reduce stomach acid so surgery wounds could heal) and when that was okay, the next day I swallowed a larger capsule (Actigall-for stopping gallstones after RNY).

I started using the PatchMD and ordered 6 months, so I figure that by that time I can try to swallow the regular horse size vitamins from Costco--then again, I may stay on the patch. It is so convenient not having to take calcium all throughout the day. And it is cheaper than taking chewable calcium (Celebrate).

I have from just a few days out with no problems. My PPI was in capsule form, and I occasionally buy dry D3 in a capsule as well.

I woke up in between a memory and a dream...

I started taking omeprazole capsules whole as soon as I got home from surgery (but then, they are pretty small).  My ursodiol capsules were pretty large, so I started taking them whole at about 2 or 3 weeks out.

You can take capsules. Those little gel filled caps are a no.

Question - why are the gel filled caps a no-go?

I think I wasn't so clear here. Not so much gel capsules but those the little gel pillows caps with oil in them. Normally filled with oil and are fat soluble. We don't do fat soluble well. Vitamins A, D, E are all fat soluble so you want those in dry from. Also docs are bad about giving everyone D in those little green gel caps. Wrong kind of D and we won't absorb it because of the fat soluble piece.

Since I have trouble remembering what/what isn't fat soluble I just avoid the little gel pillow caps.

I had no restrictions as far as any pills/medications.

Oh except when I took Carafate pills for an ulcer about a month after surgery, I had to dilute it in warm water to coat the stomach.

I am almost three years out and I still can't swallow pills/capsules. I try to get everything in liquid form or cut the pills in half.I avoid capsules all together.
