Advil after RNY
I had RNY on 9/23/15. Everything has been really good. I recall reading that some people can never use Advil, etc. after RNY. Has anyone had any issues? Asking as I picked up the plague somewhere along the line (probably from my kids) and am running a low grade fever and prefer Advil over Tylenol. Thanks in advance!
NSAIDs (whi*****lude Advil) are generally off limits to RNY patients because they can cause stomache ulcers. However, I had my tonsils out last week and the Percocet was not helping enough with the pain and I had some throat swelling that started to get scary. I contacted my surgeon's office and received permission to temporarily take Ibuprofen with Prilosec.
I notice you are only 2 months out. Your stomach is still healing and I wouldn't risk it. If in doubt, discuss with your surgeon.
Take the Tylenol. In this situation, it's not worth the risk.
6'3" tall, male.
Highest weight was 475. RNY on 08/21/12. Current weight: 198.

I am concerned because you do not really seem to understand that taking advil, etc, can cause you real problems. Did your surgeon or someone from your surgeon's office not go over this with you?? They should have, versus something that you "recall reading."
Please contact your surgeon's office so they can explain why this can cause such problems so you know for sure what you need to avoid going forward.
If you search this website for ulcers, you will get insight into the problems you could be inviting.
We want you to have a good experience with your WLS!!

Since you are so close to your operative date, I would not use it, but take tylenol. I do not like tylenol either, and it does not work for my pain.It doesn't hurt my stomach, but helps nothing except a fever.
My situation is different, I had multi-procedure decades ago that included the basic RNY,(was before lap surgery, and surgeon was an instructor) and included several other procedures including banding above and below the pouch GB removal, appendix out, multiple cysts and fibroids,..and a large portion of my colon removed.. I was also told I would never be able to use any NSAIDS except Indocin suppositores, then they became unavailable.
I have used advil /motrin/nuprin sporatically for severe pain, and I paid for it.. I had some nasty side effects of gastritis following one episode of intense unrelieved pain... One of my episodes of intestinal torsion was after 4 weeks of intense pain that i used motrin to partially relieve. I quit that job, and pain did resolve after two weeks.
I bought that lesson, and you should not have to.
Now I have a pain protocol I use, should I have another flare. It includes Ultram 50 mg, with 400 motrin and 30mg prevacid to protect my pouch. For a long time I used it twice a week, now I rarely need it.
It's no longer an option for you, especially being so new. I know it really sucks, but that should have been made crystal clear to you by your medical team. I MUCH preferred Advil or aspirin to Tylenol pre-surgery, so having to switch to Tylenol left me grumbling and grumping, but it works fine for me.
I am 3 days shy of being 2.5 years out, and a couple of months ago, I accidentally took some cold meds containing aspirin. ( I forgot to read the label as I was in a cold-induced fog. ) Hours later, I was having really awful ulcer-type pains. I took Prilosec and Carafate I had left after having two previous ulcers. My doc said it's likely I caused myself some mild gastritis by doing that. I do not want a repeat, so I learned my lesson to be extra diligent.
You definitely want to do everything possible to avoid ulcers forming, especially in your blind stomach. There are no easy ways to treat an ulcer there.
I hope you start to feel better soon. I know it's no fun being mommy and being sick at the same time. Mommies tend to not get sick days.

Since I was older I had a very long talk with my Surgeon. He said, NSAIDs are "generally" off limits to RNY patients because they "can" cause stomach ulcers.
Since you are so early out I would stick with Tylenol like Grim suggested. But long term here is what my surgeon said for "ME".
You "MAY" get stomach ulcers if you use NSAIDs long term (day after day months after months). He said not everyone gets ulcers and if you are really suffering it was ok for me to take one here and there. I have to confess there were times ibuprofen was the only thing that gave me relief. And I have taken it, but never on a regular basis and I am 11 years out.
Keep us posted on how you are doing!

Kathy

Thank you all for your responses. I truly appreciate everyone's input. :) I did take Tylenol and it helped. I reread all my paperwork from surgeon today (brain working much better) and it does say no advil, aspirin, etc., however, it didn't give a reason. I will mention that it should have the reason why at my next appointment. Thank you all again!
