3 weeks post op today!
So I am officially 3 weeks post op today and as an anniversary gift to myself I ate a bit too much and possibly dumped....had cramping in my chest, could feel the food in my esophagus and for the icing on the cake vomited...I will never let that happen again. But still very happy I had the surgery and would do it again in a heartbeat!

Unless you were eating something that is high in sugar, it was not dumping. Dumping is a direct result of undigested sugar entering your intestines, rapidly, because you have no pyloric valve. Symptoms are racing heart (you literally feel like you are having a heart attack), cramping diarrhea, feeling clammy or sweaty, increased blood pressure, and sometimes nausea. Your intestines respond by pulling fluid from wherever they can and rushing the fluid to the intestines to flush the sugar. It is bad enough that you feel like you're going to die and you contemplate a trip the the ER. I would not wish dumping on my worst enemy. If you have to ask whether you dumped or not... you probably didn't. You would know...it's THAT BAD!
You likely just ate too fast, too much, or didn't chew well enough. If your vomit was a thick mucus, you have experienced "the foamies", but not dumping. Many of us have gastric distress from foods that disagree with us after surgery. Dumping is very specific and only 30% of RNY patients experience it.
Yeah, not dumping, but when you feel that horrible, it doesn't matter.
The foamies are horrible. On the plus side, you are now truly one of us.

"Foamies" are when you eat too fast, too much, or don't chew enough. The food gets stuck in the stoma and the saliva starts to back up behind the blockage. You vomit the foamy saliva, but not the stuck food. The best way to handle it is to NOT DRINK ANYTHING and lay down on your side until it passes. Sometimes it takes HOURS to pass and can be very painful. This is incentive to slow down, chew your food properly, and stop eating before you are full.
I learned the hard way... chew well, eat slowly and make sure it is moist and not dry.... It will save you a lot of heartache.
