What's On Your Thursday Menu, RNYers?
Hey all! Just a head's up: I'm in a foul mood today. I tell you, at 45 years old you'd think I'd have this hormone swing all figured out by now, but I don't. I'll have a day or a couple of days where I'm a ***** on wheels and then all of a sudden I'm like, "Wait, what's the date? Oh, well that explains it." This epiphany doesn't temper my mood at all, but at least I know why I'm raging. Does anyone else still deal with this crap?
My son had his yearly physical yesterday and I'm going to come right out and say that he takes after his Mom when it comes to food. He told the doctor, without any prompting from me or even any prior discussion, that when he comes home from school and has a snack, he just wants more snacks. He told her he finds it hard to stop once he starts. This is not what I want for my kid and I hope this isn't a case of "too little, too late" when it comes to modeling healthy behaviors. The doctor gave us some suggestions and ideas and we're going to start putting those in place and see how it goes. He's only 10, and while I didn't ask, I'm pretty sure he's almost at my current weight. I know where this can go and I don't want him to live the life of a fat kid. Wow. Way to bring the room down, Kristen. LOL

Uh, yeah, I can relate to the wacky hormone swings. It ain't pretty. 'Nuf said.
Sorry to hear about your son struggling. My nephew is 8 and I spend a lot of time with him. He has really poor eating habits and he is already overweight. He's the only one in his family who is heavy or struggles with weight issues, so it is especially hard. I try to make super fun healthy snacks but he will not even try them and he is adopting this rudeness about trying new foods as a part of his personality. It's a serious struggle.
Here's my plan for today...(15 weeks post-op)
B: Mary's Gone Crackers with Laughing Cow Wedge & Dried Cured Sausage
S: Chai Protein Latte
L: Insides of an Italian Sub with Romaine (never got to eat this for lunch yesterday)
S: Cherry Fage 0% Greek Yogurt
D: Buffalo Chicken & Baby Carrots
Exercise
Hips felt better last night with no running yesterday, so I will pop onto the elliptical and see how that feels. I'll shoot for an hour!
It absolutely kills me when I see my kids having the same struggles/demons that I have. It is good that your son recognized it and is facing it head on! Goodness knows I wish I had done that.
My question of the day...has anyone had new moles or skin discoloration pop up after a lot of weight loss? Especially where there is a lot of loose skin?
B-mini sausage biscuits
S-fruit
L-mexican
S-banana
D-meatballs in spaghetti sauce
Can't relate on the hormone/mood thing. I don't want hormones be the scapegoat; I like to own my *****iness...-- its ALL ME LOL
I feel for ya and your son. Having lived the life of a fat kid I don't want that for my sons. And having been the daughter of a mother who was clueless about how to address my weight-- I don't want to come down on my kids like my mother did on me. My son asked me the other day to stop buying snacks because he doesn't know how to lose the 10#'s the doctor told him to lose. Crazy thing is-- doctor never told him to lose 10#...he told him to work at maintaining his weight and he'd be fine. I did hide the Halloween candy and bought some apples as an alternative. I also try to encourage him to eat a protein with his breakfast to help fill him up more.
FYI- I just found out the Y offer free memberships for 7th graders. (I have one in 7th grade). I'm going to take him this weekend. He's always wanted a gym membership, but its hard to find gyms that allow youths to use the facilities.

Best decision ever-Mirena IUD. I haven't had any periods or symptoms since. I am already planning on using them until menopause. I'll just have suffer through a couple of years without to have kids.
I knew I was eating poorly when I was young, but I didn't know how to eat better. What they taught at school just confused me even more and made me think I should eat bread all day (stupid food pyramid). Maybe schools are better about this today, but you should definitely talk about nutrition with him. Hopefully he will take it to heart.

Mirena is completely different from other types of hormonal birth control because it is local. It operates different than other birth controls because it is placed inside the uterus making it a hostile environment. This allows it to use only a very small amount of hormones. My ob/gyn explained to me a great length how this avoids the negative effects of the hormones because they do not circulate throughout your system. The hormones remain local as opposed to other forms of birth control where they have to travel through your body. I would not take your experience with pills or depo shots to mean anything about how Mirena would work for you. Depo shots are notorious for weight gain, and ortho tri cyclen made me have suicidal thoughts, which I didn't know was a side effect until it happened to me. Bottom line is that you are much less likely to experience side effects from Mirena because the hormone level is vastly lower than with pills and depo shots.

I currently have 2 Mirena IUDs. Mine were inserted due to have uterine CA and being too big to have a hysterectomy. The weight gain threat was a non issue because of the cancer. And, I did have WLS after so IUDS insertion and have had good weight loss.
I will say on an up note for me.... I have not had any cancer cells on my uterine biopsies since I have had the Mirenas. And just got my last report yesterday so right now I am LOVING my Mirenas.
I'm on my third Mirena. I can't consciously say that its caused any weight gain. Any weight gained was certainly justified by my **** poor eating habits! And i'd lost weight successfully with the Mirena prior to surgery.
I used to have no periods, surgery threw that into whack. I think they are starting to diminish again, and will eventually disappear once again. But periods with Mirena are far lighter/faster then w/o

I know exactly how you feel about your son, AV!! My daughter takes right after me (and her father!), and thankfully she is VERY active right now with karate 5 days a week and sports. But I know when those slow down, she may have some weight issues. I have even caught her sneaking food, and can just see myself at her age :(
Oh the friggin hormones, I am 33 years old and do the same thing as you! My cycle is spot on every 28 days also, so you would think I would know its coming! NOPE NOPE NOPE! lol
