Hi folks,

Just heard about an hour ago that I my insurance approved my RNY, so I'm all happy about that.

But I was wondering what to expect after it's all been done. I've asked my surgery a few things but I think asking people who have actually been through it is better.

How bad is the pain the few days after?

How long does it last?

How long does it take to get back to walking and moving around again?

Is is easy to slip into vitamin deficiency?

I'm also a bit wonder about the whole operation in general, the risk of dying in the Operating Room.. etc I have pretty bad axniety issues when it comes to things about health so while I'm happy about getting approved I'm now worried about stuff stuff.

:(

I just posted a very similar question! I'm very nervous for right after the surgery, I hate being sick, I hate being down. I can't wait to see what everyone has to say about what to really expect. I'm replying to follow your post And CONGRATULATIONS!

Pain is subjective. Some say its intense, other says they felt nothing. Some complain of gas pain, other don't.

When I woke from surgery I felt more like I had a tummy tuck...my abdomen just felt tight.

I was off of pain meds my by my 4th day home.

You should walk immediately after surgery, it helps you heal. I was easily moving around by the second week, but still had stop you in your tracks winces of pain. I was good to go by 3 weeks out.

If you don't take your vitamins, I'd imagine deficiency is easy. I was deficient in Vitamin D going into surgery though.

Its normal to worry. I was totally confident in my team, hospital, etc, so I wasn't worried, I figured is something happened it was just my time...regardless of the surgery.

I'll second everything that Peachpie wrote, and would like to add that I learned in my pre-op classes that the death-rate from having a C-Section is slightly higher than for those having an RNY. Now - that's just what our teacher told us in classes, and of course it all depends on your health going in - but I personally, liked those odds a lot. So did my Mom, who was so worried about me. I did not research this, but I allowed that information to soothe my fears and it worked.

First off, congrats on getting approved! I know how exciting it is!

The pain immediately after was almost non-existent. They keep you pretty drugged up in the hospital.

I'm still in pain 3 weeks out. I have been checked out by my surgeon and it's because I have been doing too much. Had I taken it easy, my pain would have been gone around 1 1/2 weeks out. Be careful with thinking you feel fine and doing too much.

I could move around my house on the day I got back from the hospital. I've been mobile since then. Some days are easier than others.

If you don't take your vitamins you're more than likely going to be vitamin deficient. My surgeon didn't press the issue of vitamins immediately after surgery, he said it was more important to stay hydrated for the time being.

I have horrible anxiety as well so my Primary doubled my dosage of Xanax. Do you take anything for anxiety? I'm sure if you talk to your Primary doctor, they'll be more than happy to give you something to help with your anxiety. I thought going into the surgery that I was going to die on the table, being over 400 pounds. They would not do the surgery if they didn't think you were going to do very well with it. Trust your surgeon, and trust your body! You're going to do great.

I'm currently not on anything for my Anxiety, but thankfully I see my Doctor tomorrow and will let him know how bad my Anxiety has gotten, plus I'll be able to tell him the good news about getting approved.

They've been pushing the whole take your Vitamins thing on me since I started my 6 month supervised weight loss vists, so I have no problem taking them, just more worried about falling behind on them cause of how my stomach will be afterwards and how little I'll be able to consume.

Yeah being that big would concern me too. I was close to 400 myself, coming in at around 370 but current down to 335 since they gave me this Liver Reduction Diet to follow.

Thanks for the replies!

Hi:

I am a newbie who is waiting for final approval from doctor and then hopefully my surgery will be in late Nov. early Dec.

This will be my second surgery, since I had Gastric Sleeve done in Feb. of 2014. I also started at more than 400 and have lost 125#s, but have stopped losing almost 9 months ago. My surgeon reminded me that the Sleeve was meant to be a first surgery and that the RNY would complete the process. Since I have about 100#s + to lose (not sure my goal yet) I have been going through the process of getting test, visits and all that done for surgery.

I am so sorry that this has been a bit painful for you - but I do remember those first few days - and how I wanted to get out and do things. Luckily for me the pain stopped me. My sweetheart had a gastric sleeve done last week and is already pushing to drive, to move to the next step foodwise, etc. I told him that he needs to slow down or he is going to be in the same boat you are.

Good luck in your recovery.

I am a week post op and I am still dealing with some discomfort. I too was worried for all the same reasons, but knew that I was in very reliable hands. I found comfort in my surgical team. I am pretty much off my pain meds, I saved a little for a night as I do find in uncomfortable to sleep. My office had me start vitamins the day after I got home. I am still working hard to meet 64oz a day will protein shakes and water. I find challenging. It was really a surprise because yesterday I didn't feel like drinking at all. I have no appetite at all. So I am dealing now more with the emotional side of the surgery.

I also journal how I feel from day to day so I can look back and remember what I went through and it just makes me feel better. As far as moving around for me, getting up and laying down are the biggest issues 1 week post op.

I wish you the best.

Open so yes I had pain. Meds worked. Walking hours after surgery at my insistance. Tanked out on D because I was lazy about vitamins. I got to goal and 13 years am still there.
