To the working RNYs
I'm a teacher and was out two weeks at Christmas Break. I wish I would've had a little more time- maybe a few half days- but it really wasn't horrible. I was mostly tired.
RNY on December 23, 2014 with Dr. Michael Greene

I had my surgery on a Tuesday and returned to work on the following Tuesday. I have a very active job, but I just listened to my body. When I hurt I stopped doing whatever was causing pain. I also stopped all pain meds on day 3 post-op. I found that walking around really helped me in more ways than one!! Good Luck!!
I did pretty much the same. Had my surgery on a Thursday and was back at work the next Thursday. I probably should've given myself another few days, but I'm doing a few half days and my bosses get that I need to take things at half-speed for a while. But I work in tv but sitting at a desk all day, and nothing really stops there, even for medical necessities, so I'm fine with the amount of time I had off. I only had 800 emails to go back to lol. I was just going nuts being stuck at home with nothing to do but rest (which I usually long for!)... Mentally, I was ready...

Mine recommended a minimum of a week but said he'd sign the FMLA forms for up to 6. I took 3 but would have been fine to go back after 2 (my 3rd week post-op was my husband's 1st, so I was mainly home that week for him). I supervise a hospital department and do a good mix of desk sitting and hall wandering...with a more sedentary job I might have tried to go back sooner.
I am out for three weeks. My doctor said 2, but he can easily justify 3, so that's what I took. I am a revision and I also had hernia repair. I am a week and 2 days post op and I still have a lot of discomfort on my left side large incision. Plus I am transitioning my diet on Weds and I want a chance to adjust to that.
My surgeon said I could go back after 2 weeks, but could not lift over 15 pounds for 30 days. I'm a RN and work a very demanding job. He had me on FMLA for 6 weeks. There's no way I could've went back after two weeks. I'm just over 3 weeks post -op and finally felt good enough to clean on my kitchen last night. Rest and take it easy as long as you can.

Thank you everyone for the great advice. I go in next week to hopefully set a date. I am still not sure if I am doing the RNY or the VSG. I am torn not sure what would be the best for me. If it cures my GERD I am all for the RNY but not sure if the healing takes longer and I more worried about loosing my hair and was told with the RNY you would more than with the VSG. I guess I have to leave it up to my Dr. to decide which one would be the best for me.
Will keep everyone posted.
