add me to the list, too. Had it at 55. No problems other than a stricture early on (which is an easy fix)

I had surgery when I was 59. I was in as good of health as a morbidly obese person can be! The surgery went fine. No problems. I am almost six months postop. It is encouraging seeing my weight SLOWLY decrease. I am not a rapid loser. It's just not fair because I certainly could have been classified as a rapid gainer!!!

I am 53 years old and just had my RNY on 10/06/15. My surgery went well. I am currently just over 3 weeks post op and feeling good. My biggest issue has been with bowel movements. They have been very large, and difficult. I've now put colace and a sugar free, flavor free fiber powder into my regime, with my doctor's approval of course. I have lost 34 pounds from my heavy weight to date. Good luck Tricia, you'll be fine.

I copied this from an earlier post on this thread in case it may be helpful to you :)

I battled constipation for 1.5 years. Then PA at surgeons office told me to try cleaning out with one of those glass bottles of laxative that are used pre op. (cant remember the name of it) Then take one dose of mirilax (generic) daily in my coffee. WORKS LIKE A CHARM.

Oh, after buying OTC generic mirilax for a year, I just got a prescription for it and is covered with copay on insurance. So about $25 per 3 months. Totally worth it!!

I had my RNY in April (7 months today) at the age of 55!! I am down 110 LBS. I have to admit I had a rough beginning with nausea and unable to tolerate vitamins. When I had my six month appointment my Dr. was floored!! With all the variables age, hysterectomy, etc... She was very pleased with my progress. All my labs came back great, all that being said don't let your age worry you 15 years ago was not your time now is your time go ROCK it!! Just like quitting that smoking habit you got this!! God bless you Tricia

Hello. RNY & 55! I remember saying the same, since I've been on this web site... and others since 2005. I had RNY Feb 2013. So glad for it. I learned a lot of things along the way which enabled me to be successful. All the health issues I hade pre-op are all in remission (gone), and I just take vitamins now. I did not have to deal with smoking pre op. Stick to your guns and keep strong. Your success is waiting for you.... it been waiting for you. Best wishes.

I am 11 years out was 54 when I had my surgery, best decision I ever made in my life. I was 300 lbs.  I did have an abscess at one of my incision sites, but   healed quickly.  Recovery time went well, did have to increase eating slowly would throw up. ., My high blood pressure went away. I lost approx. 120 lbs went from size down to size 6 didn',t feel well at that size, took a year but went up to 8 and felt better there.  Never regretted it, I couldn't hardly walk, lots of pain in legs and after weight loss I could run, play with grandchildren, and walk three miles . I have no idea what I weigh, because I don't weigh myself anymore I just go by how my clothes fit and adjust my walking and eating if I feel my closthes are getting to tight. sl

First of all, congrats on the quitting smoking!  That's one of the hardest, if not the hardest thing you'll ever do and you should be congratulated every single day!  Next, it's okay to be scared.  I don't think anyone of us went into this not being a little afraid.  And that's okay.  Own and accept it and think about it and then release it.  Because fear is not going to serve you well.  Worry and fear never changed tomorrow's outcomes for anyone, well except probably in a negative way.  But I digress...

I had WLS, gosh, in June of 2011, and besides some pesky surgical issues, I've done fine.  The usual issues happened to me that I'm sure you've read about on here (because I'm sure you've been pouring over the forums haven't you?):  gas, bloating, nausea, things taste funny, water hurts your stomach, meat hurts, eggs hurt, yadda, yadda, yadda... And then magically (almost) it seems to normalize...I don't know when exactly that happened but it did!  Maybe 3 months, maybe 5 months, maybe 6, but sometime in that window, life just started becoming normal (well as normal as it can be when you have a stomach the size of an egg).  Oh sure, there's some realities that are different.  Vitamins forever, no NSAIDs forever, protein forward, liquid avoidance with meals, etc.  These are the rules that remain in effect for RNYers for, like, forever.  And for me personally:  no ice cream -- its the perfect storm of fat, sugar and gastric distress!  No pasta, again, my pouch don't like it at all. And there are some other food sensitivities that I've learned to adjust to....that's my reality.  And I've adapted, no issue (well, only small issues ~grin~).

Most of my issues in post op RNY life have nothing to do with RNY.  They are issues of being a 50+ y.o. woman living life in a 50+ y.o. body.  So I'm thankful everyday for injuries, arthritis, aging and menopause.  Because I'm growing older and that's something that I may not have been able to do had I remained morbidly obese.

I wish you well!  Seize the opportunity you've been given and live your life.  It's incredible out here!
