Searching ages 50+ who had RNY
I was 57 at the time of surgery. No problems. There are 2 doctors and they operate on 2 days so our "group" of WLS patients have the same dates for appointments with doctors and NUTs. Out of the 12-14 people, I'd say 1/3 of them were over age 50. The insurance company saves a lot of money by paying for the WLS as opposed to paying for open heart surgery at our age. Our instructional book states that there are very few obese people living past the age of 70.
I had 2 c-sections in my 20's. The WLS in my 50's was not any different. The only pain I felt was gas pain. I was walking 1 mile 2 days after surgery. I did find that I took naps for over a month. I think that was due to low calories and surgery on organs and not so much a factor of age.
My brother was in ICU for over 30 days for congested heart failure. He also takes insulin. He had the surgery over 4 years ago and is still alive because of it. He has kept off the 150 pounds that he lost.
You will do great.

I had surgery in May 2012 - I was 51. Best thing I ever did - I lost 160 pounds, am maintaining a 140 pound loss for 3+ years (20 pound regain was ok, since I got down to 140 at 5'9"). No complications at all - I took a month off work and was glad I did, since I was really tired, but if I didn't have that good disability I could have gone back sooner. The maintainance is a challenge but totally manageable.. I was worried like you about the risks - I am a single mom and my daughter was only 11 when I had surgery and I was terrified of leaving her... but what helped me so much was realizing there were huge risks in not doing the surgery, including stroke, heart attack, etc. I am so so so grateful for this life-changing surgery! best advice? do exactly what your surgeons says.. I still maintain no carbonated drinks, no drinking after meals, limiting sugars to 5 grams per serving, protein first. I am not the best exerciser, that's my challenge! good luck
Hi,
I am 58 years old and just had RNY surgery on 9/10/15 after my failed lap band had eroded into my stomach. I have lots of medical issues but went through surgery very well. I had a surgeon I trusted, and went to a hospital with a good reputation. I wish, I had done this years ago!!
Best wishes,
Karen
Good morning! I'm turned 60 this past July. I had RNY April 22, 2015 so I'm just over 6 months out. I've lost 99 lbs so far and kick myself for not having surgery sooner. I took 2 weeks off and went back to work after with no problems. The surgery went very well, they also removed my gall bladder and repaired 2 hernias. I haven't had ANY bad side effects and follow the rules to a T. I wish you the best of luck and a speedy recovery. Its a piece of cake...well maybe not, but don't sweat it.
I was 52 at surgery, 3 years ago. No complications, no problems, no issues. It couldn't have gone better.
Barring medical complications, which are rare, you'll take from surgery as much as you put into it.

HI...after seeing your pasted reply several times, I have a couple of friendly thoughts: 1. OH would feel less effective for me if more replied with "see my page" 2. I find satisfaction and therapy re-typing experiences in hope my replies are fresh and helpful to others each and every time. These comments aren't meant to be an insult--you may have good reason for choosing to reply this way. My thoughts are more of a suggestion to consider trying a new reply if that is a possibility? Wow! Very passive aggressive.
