Searching ages 50+ who had RNY
I am 53 yrs old. I should have had surgery 15 yrs ago, but someone changed my mind. 15 yrs later I am kicking myself in my behind for not doing it. I am 4 months into the 6 month waiting period for RNY. I currently weigh 302 pounds. I need to know how your surgery went. Any complications occur? How was recovery time? Reason for me asking, is I am scared to death. Being that I am older and not in my 20's anymore, I feel that I may have a hard time with the surgery. I am healthy. I have slightly high blood pressure, but it is controlled. I am currently borderline diabetic, had my finger picked today at the doctors and it was 117. I was 325 but as of today, I weigh 302. I have been a lifetime smoker...but due to the surgery I had to quit smoking...no problem, I was ready to quit. I am 5 months out from not smoking. I hoping I can locate some people who is willing to share their journey. If you do youtube video's, please put your channel oown below, I would love to see the video's. Thank you so much, Tricia
I was 2 days before my 56th birthday when I had surgery. I actually got out of the hospital on my birthday. I was post menopausal and on meds for high blood pressure. At one year I had lost a total of 165lbs. 25 before and 140 after. Now I am 15 months out, and no regrets. I was scared and never thought I'd be one of 'those people' who had the surgery. Being morbidly obese is scary too .
Love not having to worry about life, will I fit in the chair? Do I really need to go up these stairs? Will I make it?

I was discharged on my birthday, too. Turning 53 years old made the birthday gift of WLS feel like it was meant to be when it was meant to be. It was time to wave the white flag after war years of losing weight, regaining it back in lightening speed, and up ticking to SSMO proportions. Putting off WLS was either hard to admit defeat or too chicken--probably too chicken.
I so agree...

Yes. The years of effort. The regain. The speediness of the regain. The exponential increase in the speed of the regain every time. The alarming advance into morbid obesity. The white flag, the white flag, the white flag.
I am 66 years old. I am three months out and have shrunk 50 lbs. my biggest problem has been constipation. I know I could have managed that better and still working on it. The surgery itself was not a big deal pain wise, just got tired easily. Took six weeks off work, probably could have been less. My energy is way better, blood pressure meds down. Stopped checking glucose. I have made food errors and still trying to improve there. I am more wrinkled as my balloon has deflated. I do niot like that much. All in all, so far really glad I went ahead. I will more likely be healthier at 70.
I battled constipation for 1.5 years. Then PA at surgeons office told me to try cleaning out with one of those glass bottles of laxative that are used pre op. (cant remember the name of it) Then take one dose of mirilax (generic) daily in my coffee. WORKS LIKE A CHARM.
Oh, after buying OTC generic mirilax for a year, I just got a prescription for it and is covered with copay on insurance. So about $25 per 3 months. Totally worth it!!

I was 57 1/2. I am 10 months post-surgery. I have a friend who was 69, with a bad heart. They required a cardio-t surgeon to be on stand-by just in case. She was fine. Recovering from the anesthesia is difficult for me.

It is not unreasonable for a healthy 53 year old to anticipate living until 100.
That would mean 47 healthy and trim years. I was 59 having surgery and am now 67. I am still at my goal weight.
I believe that older people are often better able to concentrate on a project and take the time to complete it. Surgery is just like buying a new car. It is up to you how you treat that car and where you take it. Follow the rules to lose and maintain the weight loss. Keep you body in tip top condition with the right food, plenty of water and exercise.
Surgery was what turned my life and health around. I look, act and feel years younger than I did when I was obese.
I have never regretted it.
Real life begins where your comfort zone ends
I am getting ready to turn 55 in a couple of weeks and had surgery 3/10/15 and came through it like a trooper. I was home the next day. Was off work a day shy of 2 weeks. I had no issues at all! I followed drs orders and did great! I am still in ahhh that I really had this done...tickled pink that I now have a tool that can help me stay on track! We will always have to work it, but having surgery makes it easier to do I think. I never had issues with the post op gas they talk about. I got up and walked that night and the next day. That first week I wanted to do a lot of sleeping and basically just sleep, walked and drank. Drove myself to my 1 week follow up appointment that was about 50 minute drive from me without trouble. Takes a little while for the energy level to come back full swing, but it came back more each day!!! I have a good friend that will be having surgery in Dec that is also approaching 55. We all are still young!! :)
