Caffeine!
I am a few months into my 6 mo pre-op diet and my next step is to cut out all caffeine. I am starting now, and it sucks! My question is - I have seen so many people talk about drinking coffee after surgery, why would one surgeon say no caffeine after surgery and others can have it?

My NUT told me that because caffeine is a diuretic, that for every 8 ounces of coffee I drank, I'd have todrink am extra 8 ounces of water.
I've done some reading, and I don't believe the studies fully support that, bit is what I was told.
I do drink caffeine in moderation, but I don't mind drinking decaf coffee, and I stay away from soda entirely, so I dint really have an issue with it.
Because caffeine is such a strong addiction that they know most people will not be able to give it up. I gave up all caffeine years ago and I am much calmer and happier than I was when I was consuming it.
Caffeine makes me more awake and also more nervous and sensitive to things. I know it is bad for my RNY body and increases the chance of ulcers. Without caffeine I am much calmer in stressful situations. I sleep eight full hours and wake up refreshed and full of energy.
If you can give up caffeine your life will be better.

My name is SkinnyScientist and I am an addict. I am addicted to caffeine. If I dont get 6 cups in within 3 hours of walking up, I will wander about in a fog. By noon, I will start to become angry and disorientated, with a headache so bad that I will want to bash my head in.

Guilty, too. Coffee has become my "go to" and know too much of anything is not a good sign. I agree life would be better without it like White Dove said. Inappropriate words come out of my mouth after a pot of coffee just like when I drink alcohol. For example, today when buying chicken feed at the local coop store, I told the male cashier (jokingly) I tried killing our rooster which wasn't true but said for strange amusement. You've witnessed it on OH, too...why on earth I aired dirty laundry about family issues...I apologize. Time to cut myself off from coffee before I regret saying worse or end up with a giant ulcer that will shut me up for good.

Aw, Sel, I love your dirty laundry. We all have it, and you always have such good humor and perspective. Everything you write is real and refreshing. So, give up your coffee if you must, but not your words.

I don't know but my surgeon let me have tea and espresso right after surgery :) :) Did that motivate me to get up and walk around the ward ? YOU BET!
Would I have had my friends sneak in Starbux if he didn't let me have it thru the cafeteria ? YUP . He did fix my GERD with hiatal hernia surgery which is still miraculously holding five years post op .. so maybe he was testing the operation ...
My NUT told me it is because when we drink it hits the same place on the pouch each time. It is possible for this to result in an ulcer in your pouch. Because of this, my surgeon said I could have it 'rarely'. She said that she has many clients who have a cup a day and have had not issues. However, coffee just doesn't taste the same since surgery. I used to LOVE the taste of it. Now- it's ok. So, maybe you will have the same thing!
Good luck to you!
