Calling on the men...
Hey guys - my husband is finally considering WLS. He is concerned that he won't have the energy to build muscle and stay strong. He has a lot of muscle mass now and is worried.
I told him that men can be muscular and very successful with WLS --- he is considering RNY vs. Sleeve - so will seek sleever advice as well.
Any tips from the men that I can share/use to encourage?
Thank you!!!
I mentioned a couple of things on the VSG board, but will add another thought here.
There were a couple of things I could do better when I was huge. Sheer mass can do some things that strength, stamina, or agility alone can't. You can be the strongest man alive, but if you weigh 160 pounds, you'll never be an NFL lineman. You need to be strong AND huge.
But for everything else, I can do far, far more at 185 pounds than I could at 475, or 300, or even a mere 250. Your husband should look at the big picture. Life is better, no question about it.
6'3" tall, male.
Highest weight was 475. RNY on 08/21/12. Current weight: 198.

My husband is 5 months out from VSG. His body fat percentage is half what it used to be. He's going to the gym 3 times a week, and we're doing long bike rides and hikes with our dog every weekend. Surgery was certainly excellent for his overall energy level.
