I had surgery the 21st. Home 23rd. 24th was the beginning of my hell. I was prescribes 30mg quick tabs of Prevacid. I'm to take one in the am. I usually take it at 8am and wait 5min before I take all my other medications. It's lasts untill about 3pm. And then my hell begins. I started taking a second but it barely takes the edge off, making consumption of anything a challenging task. My diet currently includes Premiere Protein drinks, a home made protein drink (greek yogurt, milk, some berries, protein powder and stevia), water and broth. It's not my personal home made drink because I was getting the acid attacks when only on the premiere protein. I've had days of just my home made drink and no premiere protein and it's the same thing happends. Anyone else experience this? For how long did it last? What antacids do you use? Still waiting for a return call from the hospital for an answer from my RN.

It might not be acid that you are experiencing.  Sometimes we have motility issues with our esophagus right after surgery.  That means that the muscles are not pushing the food through effectively and the food just sits there.  It can feel like acid pain.  This usually resolves itself with time.  The main culprit is anesthesia.  It sometimes takes a few months for the anesthesia to work out of your system.

Prevacid never worked for me.  If it is an acid problem, I would try a proton pump inhibitor like Prilocec or Nexium.

Glad you put a call in to the RN. My doc said reflux after RNY is rare, but sometimes it happens. I was on twice-daily Pepcid for a couple months after surgery. I still need Prilosec daily, but I had severe reflux pre-op that wasn't controlled on twice the dose, so I'm ok with it. I know some people have issues tolerating dairy after surgery, but I don't know if that ever presents itself as GERD. Good luck, and I hope you get some relief!

Update:  RN recommended gaviscon. It was like pouring  water on a fire!  Pure delight!!  I have an appointment tomorrow for a follow up and to check things out.
