Pre-Screening meetings
Just a few days until I go for my three screening meeting (Dietitian, Behavorial health and finally the MD)
What purpose do these three sessions serve and what can I expect?
I feel like I am going to take the SAT's with high hopes that whatever they are looking for in these three sessions.....I pass.
From my screenings, here's what the purpose seemed to be: the dietician's job was to make sure proper food choices were understood, the behavioral professional's job was to make sure I was ready for the commitment, and the MD's job was to make sure I was a candidate for WLS. Here's what I think you can expect: DIETICIAN=how much you know about proper diet BEHAVIORALIST=if you have been abused, if you are suicidal, if you are ready and willing to be committed to the WLS lifestyle MD=to have your medical history looked at and determine if you are a good candidate for WLS
Since I had the same surgeon I can tell you not to stress! You will come home with lots more info about the post op diet and some instructions for your diet now as well. The dietitian will explain each of the stages in the post op diet and give you guidelines on meal planning post op. She will check that you understand her explanations. The mental health will be asking questions about support from your family and loved ones post op and checking your general mental health. For instance have you ever suffered from depression or addiction issues. If you have it's not a no go as I had been hospitalized for depression ànd was approved. She just asked more questions about treatment and current mental state. They do offer a mental health group that meets with her if you have need. The doctor will assess your physical health and determine if you are a good candidate for surgery. This will be the only time you see. him before surgery unless you have issues. You will probablyalso meet his nurse practitioner who does most post op care except the first visit and she is great. If you have issues post op you will see the doctor too. Please don't worry about passing as you will do just fine!
.
In addition to what was said above, they will be checking to see if you have realistic expectations of the surgery. If you understand that it is not magic, and will require a lifetime commitment to healthy eating, exercise and lifestyle change.
