Appetite help, please!

I'm about 3 months post op, and have lost 70 pounds including my 3 month pre-op diet.

Pre-op, I didn't "cheat" at all and did great with the protein shakes and everything I tried. Since surgery, i have developed some allergies or intolerances or something, and am having a difficult time eating. I'm NEVER hungry (which is FANTASTIC!) and I get all of my water in daily. Also doing great with my vitamins, and MOST days, hell or high water, i get 50g minimum of protein. I know i should be closer to 60-80, and i get there some days, but I struggle. i'm NOT snacking, I'm not eating anything that's not a good source of protein. I stay below 30g of carbs per day. So my loss is coming along great and i'm happy with the results.

BUT- i have a lot of nausea after eating. Not always, but it's fairly frequent. Interestingly, it's almost always with reheated food. Nothing old or spoiled, can be just hours after originally eating something, after it's been properly stored, but for instance, I made a ricotta bake I found on here. it was DELICIOUS, easy to make, and one recipe was enough for me to package 8 meals! i ate it fresh from the oven, no problem. The next day, i reheated one of my tupperwares of it and it made me sick. I thought it could have been a fluke since i was fine with it the day before, but had it later for dinner and again got ill. This happened with chili also.

I can no longer tolerate premiere protein (that's been since my surgery), nor have any of the powders i've tried been successful. PB2 is gross to me and I haven't found anything to add it to that I like.

i used to love chicken and beef, and now the smell of them makes me sick to my stomach.

I'm not really looking for menu ideas, but more just wondering if anyone might know why some foods make me sick sometimes but not others....? Is it possible it has something to do with the reheating process? the microwave?

This is bitter-sweet for me! I have always LOVED eating and now it's such a hassle, and it's sort of terrifying, especially if i'm at work or in public. I never know if something I eat will make me sick or not. i HATE eating now! So it's exciting, but it's scary and unhealthy. This problem seems to be getting worse, too, so it's getting more and more difficult to get my protein in daily.

I'm not eating too much, i measure 2 ounces of meat or 1/2 cup of mushy things (like the ricotta bake) and I haven't had that "stuck," overfull sensation since I first started eating solid foods.

I live alone and only cook for myself, so you can imagine this being a pretty major issue since my portions are so small. I need for the things i cook to satisfy me for 8-16 meals since that's how much I make at a time. I don't eat the same thing for 2 weeks straight, i freeze some, too, so I can mix it up for lunches and dinners, but I've yet to make something that doesn't make me sick after the second, third, or fourth portion.

any experience with this or suggestions? Thanks in advance!

I could not tolerate microwaved foods for many years.  I can now.  I learned how to prepare one portion at a time and did not freeze and reheat.  I quit taking home things from restaurants unless they could be eaten cold.

How bizarre!  Glad to know at least I'm not the only one!  I wonder what it is about the microwave?  I'm going to research that some more.  Thanks for your response.

First, your tastebuds will go through many gyrations as to what will be tolerated and not tolerated. I couldn't take the protein powder and premier for awhile, and then I found Chike and Fit Frappe Mocha - coffee flavored- and those saved me. Now I have Premier all the time. At three months out you should be getting 60g of protein every single day - no excuses.  You just have to figure out what works for you.

Microwaves make things rubbery. I try not to use it to reheat too much, reheat in the oven or even stovetop with a little water and a lid, to steam the food.  Keep food moist is so important, especially early on. If using the microwave set it on a lower power setting and cook longer, and cover the food with plastic wrap and add a little water - again to retain moisture.

I found it gets easier the further out you are, somethings got easier after 3 months, and I saw a big difference after 6 months. I also live alone too. I basically eat the same two things all wee****il I get sick of them. I don't like to freeze cooked food. I do have things frozen in my freezer in individual portions like raw chicken and fish so I can pull out one portion. I find filet fish and shrinp are easy because they thaw so fast.

Make sure you your food is moist, you are eating slowly and chew, chew, chew.....

Think outside the box.  It is possible to reheat foods without using a microwave~~pots and pans work wonders!  There's also ovens/toaster ovens.  For lunch, use thermos bottle.  (I hope this didn't come across as "snarky" .... it's just you don't mention trying any other method for reheating foods.  Sometimes a solution is so basic, we don't see it)  Maybe the food will bother you any way you reheat it, but do try other methods.

I truly hope things work out for you....you've been doing so great.  I have heard of people's tastes changing post-op...but you are really dealing with a problem.  Hopefully, it is just the microwave....  Best of luck to you.

Lol,  thanks for the suggestion.  I should have mentioned I have a toaster oven I use when at home for stuff that's easier in there (meats, mostly) and the sickness is just hit or miss in there.

Unfortunately,  at work,  I have no choice for heating options other than a microwave.  I am a teacher and have about a 12 minute total window of time for lunch by the time I get my babies settled and eating.  No time for firing up a stove top.  I have been buying fresh-cut deli meat and doing string cheese a lot at work to be on the safe side,  but it would be nice to have some variety and a hot meal without worrying about being sick for the rest of the afternoon in front of my kids.

I guess it's primarily my tastebuds, and possibly some psychosomatic issues,  too,  since I'm kind of expecting it now.

Congrats on your progress! It sounds like you are doing amazing!  My only suggestion is go to a Store like the "vitamin shoppe" or GNC, or whatever, they sell sample sizes of the protein shake mixes.  Buy a bunch of brands/flavors.  Our taste is so particular, youll love some and absolutely hate others.  Once you find your favorites, they are a godsend...

Good luck as you continue on your journey!
