Am I Ready?

How do I know when I am truly ready to take this step?  I have been going through the process since June, and as much as I thought I was ready to do this, now I'm having second thoughts.  I'm afraid I will fail.  I'm beating myself up inside.

The hardest part of the journey for me was the weeks leading up to the surgery.  I was still debating the day of surgery and thinking of walking out of the hospital without going through with it.

When I woke up from surgery, I wondered what I had done all the worrying about.  It was so easy to stick to the diet when I no longer was hungry and I could only eat a small amount at a time.  It will be eight years soon and I am still never hungry, can only eat small meals, and am still maintaining my weight loss.

I knew I was ready when I stopped caring about whether or not I would ever be able to drink another carbonated beverage, eat another pasta dish, drink a glass of wine with dinner again, eat another candy bar, or eat any number of food items again. Surgery is a big commitment, and it comes with a lot of restrictions. There is no way to know going in exactly how it will turn out for you. But I knew I was ready when I decided that I was willing to make those sacrifices in order to live a better healthier life, and I don't miss those things at all.

It will be the best thing you have ever done for yourself!  It is so scary!!  It's even scarier when you wake up from surgery and also a few weeks into the post-surgery life when you don't feel good and your not thin yet, you will have moments where you think what have I done?  BUT you will lose weight, it won't feel like you are on a diet you will continue to lose weight and you will wished you had done it years ago!!!!

Best of luck!

I had a double dialog going on in my head right up until surgery as well. It was like the devil on one sholder and the angel on the other. I was very unsure, although I didn't let on to other people. No regrets now...

I put off deciding until mounting health issues decided for me.  Here are words that helped me find comfort:   "having this surgery is like taking a giant leap of faith" and  "you have the right to change your mind right up until the moment you are being wheeled into surgery."

You are the only one who can truly know if you are ready, of course.

But I think it's helpful to flip the question on its head. You are worried you are going to fail, right? Well, do you think you can succeed in weight loss without this surgery? No judgement, but you probably can't. Most people can't (all of us, included).

You can't succeed if you don't try!
