How much vitamin D do you take every day?

My doctor wants me to take 3,000 IU per day.  I've got 2000 IU softgels, so I'm wondering if 4,000 IU would be okay to take, especially since I'm low on vitamin D anyway (pre-surgery, it was 12).

I take 8000 IU per day and my levels are good. We need dry D3, not a softgel.

The softgels are fat soluble, so we cannot absorb them. You need to buy dry vitamin D, and 3,000 per day is probably not going to be enough. I started at 10,000 per day, but that was too high. Somewhere between 5,000 and 10,000 per day is good for me.

I use liquid vitamin D3 drops and it is the only thing that has brought my vit D into normal range. I have been deficient for 15 years. (pre-WLS)... I take 10,000u per day. That doesn't even bring me into high end of normal...

You may absorb some of the D3 in the softgels, but you won't know how much.  Stick to dry D3 and monitor your labs (at least every 3 months) to see if you need to increase or decrease the dose.

I live in northern Minnesota where vitamin D levels run low in most people.  I take 6,000 IU per day and my last lab result was in the 60's.  The doctor said 60's is fine.  Many on this forum would say the 80-100 range is better.

I take 50,000 IU every Monday and my level has been spot-on for a few years now.

I take 90,000 IU dry vit D every week in divided doses. My last levels were in the 80's. You can order dry vit D online in 5000 IU, 10,000 IU or 50,000IU.
