Any Success Stories from people who have PCOS and did RNY?

I am currently scheduled for surgery for Wednesday. Luckily, I just stumbled onto this site last week and fell in love. I have read so many posts! It's like a good book you can not put down. I went to the PCOS forum and it was like I read the end of a tragedy. I have many reasons for getting this surgery, main reason was my mom passed with a heart attack at 40 years old and my grandmother at 55 they were both slim. I on the other hand have been thicker from about the 12, then lost weight at 17 to be around  150 at 5'7" I felt fat but now I dream of that size. Slowly I gained weight only to find out I have PCOS. I want to be healthy for my 2 sons (not biological) I have always wanted to birth children, to feel that kick in my stomach and endure those labor pains all women complain about. So my second reason was to have a child. My 3rd reason is to look better. With PCOS I struggle with facial hair. I also have the dark skin on the back of my neck, I have had since I was a young child, now as an adult it has developed under my arms as well. I have been told that RNY surgery could fix all those issue but the most important would be it makes my health better. I suffer from sleep apnea, diabetes, PCOS, but other than that I am healty. For an obese person I enjoy life, I climb stairs for water slides, play soccer with the kids, I just find ways to make it not as in intense for me, so people do not notice.

All the stories I read were of people stating their facial hair did not go away, they stall on loosing weight, they have acne (which I do not have now), they do not ovulate but do have periods.

Most of them are short into their adventure of this change. I was wondering if there are people out there that have done the WLS, got down to goal weight and are living life successfully, what their experience with PCOS is? After months out if it does get better. I want to know if I do all the work will I at least have less facial hair? I know everyone is different I just want to know if you do it right will the PCOS be better.

I will have the surgery either way and follow the rules as I do not want to die at 40 or even 50 from a  heart attack.

There is a user here called SkinnyScientist who may be able to advise on her experience.

I'm just three months post-op and not yet ovulating or seeing a reduction of hair. I do think my apnea is almost totally resolved though, and my blood pressure is now perfect.

Hi, I can't help you but SkinnyScientist has PCOS and has done an AMAZING job on her journey so far, I'm sure she would be happy to talk with you.  Also, there is a group for folks with PCOS and I'm sure any of them would be happy to help you out.  Good Luck!

This was also one of my reasons for surgery. I have high bp, sleep apnea (newly diagnosed), and PCOS. I've heard of people having this surgery in order to be able to have kids. I'm 37 and I haven't given up hope yet. BUT- you need to wait 18 months after the surgery to try to get pregnant. I did specifically ask my surgeon this and he said 18 months was the min.

I'm below my goal weight.  The hair growth will always be based around the hormones. I found laser treatments helped after years of electrolysis. The dark areas didnt really lighten any for me but overall with the weight loss and the new found confidence some of the PCOS symptoms that get you down, no longer bothered me as much.   I came off 2 injections and 4 pills for diabetes.  Did not get any acne.  No plans for a baby so can't help in that area.

I am also just a newbie, @3 Months out, but I've had a period 2 out of 3 of those months which is totally new for me ~ But yes, the hair still grows the same, and my neck is actually lightning up a little but it could just be because of the weight coming off it!

I was only recently "officially" diagnosed with PCOS THIS YEAR, even though a lot of the symptoms have been problems my whole life just about ~ My doctors just always thought I was fat, and thats it. So I'm sorry I can't be of more help.

I am a PCOSer.  I had surgery 3 years ago.  After losing almost 130 pounds, I was able to conceive my daughter naturally without any fertility medications.  The dark patches went away.  However, I still have the excessive facial hair.  I have periods regularly (never used to!) and I ovulate monthly.  I know I ovulate because we are trying to have another child and my predictor kit turns positive for ovulation.  The weight is still a struggle (I still have 18 pounds to lose before I'm at pre-pregnancy weight), but I'll take it any day over what I had going on before.  Good luck to you.  You can do this!!
