Help!! I am approx 4 weeks post op and I always seem to be burping and it smells horrible.  I have read other posts on here where others have had this but none list any known reasons.  I know I dont have any blockages as I was just checked for this on Friday.  I have to return to work on Tuesday and will admit this is quite embarrassing.  I take 40 mg daily of Prilosec but this doesnt seem to do anything for my excess air.  Any suggestions?

Google ketosis... if all is OK via Dr. my guess is you are just burning fat...  and releasing ketones... bad breath is a symptom of that. A good thing really.

As for the gas... burping is usually a sign you have had one or 2 bites too many... be really aware as you eat and learn your soft cue... it's the post gastric bypass little message your body tells you when you have had enough - for some it's a sneeze, a runny nose, hiccup, sigh, yawn. Stop then.

Ask your Dr about taking GasX strips (the under tongue dissolve type, cinnamon ones are great)

Best wishes back at work... bring your water with you everywhere and don't neglect drinking it.

So do you think the less than appealing smell is becasue I have eaten to much and/or too quickly?

As the previous poster stated, the foul smell is from the process of ketosis happening when you burn fat and your body is releasing ketones.  It is very common that when you burn fat rapidly, you have foul smelling breath.  There is not much that can be done about it.

The excess burping is from eating too fast or too much.  The odor and the burping are likely unrelated.  You can eat slower, and make sure you don't eat too much, to control the burping, but the odorous breath will still be there while you are burning fat at a fast rate.

I really focused today when I was eating to ensure I was allowing enough time between bites and this has helped tremendously with the excess air.  Thank you for your advise!

you might try probiotics for the odor.
