What is dumping?
Dumping is the common term for rapid gastric emptying. Because RNYers have no pyloric valve, liquids and slider foods can go straight through our new stomach and into the small intestine. Dumping only happens with sugar or very simple carbs that are quickly converted into sugar. Because of the rapid flood of sugar into the small intestine, the body pulls fluids from everywhere else into the intestine. This is when you experience all the worst parts of the bible. You go into spasms and convulsions, your heart starts beating so fast you think you're having a heart attack, you get sweaty, clammy -- I could go on. But if you get it, you won't ever ask anyone if it was dumping. If you didn't want to die, it wasn't dumping.
It's estimated that about 30% of RNYers dump, but my surgeon insists that we all would, but it takes a lot more sugar for some than others. Some dump on very little sugar. Liquid sugars seem to be the worst culprits, like ice cream, or any beverage with real sugar in it. For some, the sugar in milk can trigger an episode.
There are other stomach ailments we can get. Some have a problem with too much fat, but it isn't dumping. Not chewing protein well enough can make you feel like crap for a while, but it isn't dumping.
If you hear hoof-beats, it's probably horses, not zebras. Getting sweats, chills, feeling like a mule kicked you could be malaria, but it's probably the flu or the common cold. Many people like to think of any stomach upset as dumping, but it usually isn't.
