Too much Protein too soon
Had my surgery (bypass) 2 weeks ago and started to reach my 87g protein goal right away. My body initially tolerated it. Now, when I drink a protein shake, I get dumping syndrome symptoms. I am drinking the same protein that I had in the Hospital (Bariatric Fusion). Saw Dr and was told that by body is overloaded with protein and to to stop eating / drinking it for a few days. Feeling much better without but worried about losing muscle. Anyone else experience the same thing. How long did it take before you could tolerate protein again?
I have never heard of anyone being "overloaded" with protein, but I also don't know anyone who was getting almost 90g just 2 weeks after surgery.
It is, however, likely a reaction to the lactose in the protein shake (which isn't dumping, but has some of the same symptoms) or a reaction to the sugar alcohols it may be sweetened with. I'm not familiar with the Bariatric Fusion protein powder you are using; is it lactose free? If not, get some whey isolate (which will be lactose free, or almost lactose free) or egg white based protein powder (Jay Robb brand has some decent flavors.
What kind of sweetener is in it (anything ending with "-tol")? If so, you may want to either try drinking only small amounts or get a brand without sugar alcohols.
Also, not to worry... you won't lose any muscle from low protein just for a few days.

You don't drown by falling in the water. You drown by staying there.
Your shake is fine, the info is below: I would go with the Dr and take it easy on the protein for a few days to let your body recover. Then work towards the grams they recommend in the coming days. :-)
Bariatric Fusion Meal Replacement Key Features:
- 27 grams of medical grade whey protein isolate per serving
- 23 vitamins and minerals
- 5 grams of fiber per serving
- Lactose, aspartame and gluten free
- No sugar added
I had RNY 3 weeks ago. At first I could eat a lot. I was averaging 80 grams of protein. One day I got 117 grams of protein. My doctor and NUT said it was okay. At about 2 1/2 weeks, my pouch nerves healed or something. I can only eat about 2 oz at a time. I can probably drink 3-4 oz of protein. So...If I could do it again, I would only drink 1/2 a shake at a time until your pouch heals.

You aren't "overloaded" on protein. I have days I hit 400 grams. As others said, it's probably a reaction to that particular shake, and likely lactose.
A couple of days without protein, or any food, won't cause any long term issues.
