gaining weight after RNY surgery in 2012
I have been having for months terrible spasms, the only thing that helps is hot tea, dicyclomine, gas pills. I was recently told after a GI study that i have a Hiatal hernia. I also wake up nauseated but never vomit, i feel like i always have to go, but i dont have to and for the past year i have gained so much weight. Doctors said my pouch is not larger, that it is most likely my hormones due to menopause.
I dont know what to eat to avoid the pain and i dont know what to do to lose weight, not getting any answer from doctors.
has anyone experience this please comment really would like to lose this weight again.

A little tough love here.... If you are gaining weight, you are eating too much. It really is that simple. If you are eating simple carbs like bread, crackers, pasta, rice, sugar, etc. you will have terrible gas and spasms. These foods will also pack the pounds on. You've been to the doctor and there is no problem with your pouch.
While hormones from menopause can be a ***** you still have to control what you eat. As we get older we require less calories. You may have to drop your calories just to maintain during menopause.
Get back to eating dense protein first and then non-starchy veggies. Limit your fruit to one serving per day ( berries are the best choice). Get rid of the simple carbs. They are actually HURTING YOU!
The morning nausea may be related to dehydration. Remember that 64 ounces of fluid daily is the MINIMUM required amount.
Take an honest look at what you are eating and portion sizes. I bet you can figure this out on your own.
Best wishes to you! YOU CAN DO THIS!
Please don't listen to the tough love. You know your body!!!! I don't know what her qualifications are, if she is medical or not. However, those medications can have those side effects not too mention the swelling bloating and gas. I have advanced Crohn's disease , eat very well and I exercise, a good example is a job 68 miles last month and that doesn't count biking and aerobics classes and I have gained weight and struggle to lose weight. I do have a doctor that is testing hormones my thyroid they've looked into if I've taken certain birth controls like Depo because it can mess with the hormones. I do get an infusion and take anti-spasmodics and I have gained 35 pounds right off the bat just from the medications. If your doctor's not listening get a different doctor I had to go through three doctors before I found one and finally got treated .I ended up in the hospital off work for 7 months with five blood transfusions etc. Not all doctors listen to their patients and nit all patients are the same . not all weight gain is because you're simply eating too much. Btw, I can't eat most berries like with suggested for my fruit because of the seeds in them or that I don't digest the skin so again be careful with blanket statements like that because not everybody is the same. For someone like me eating certain berries would put me in the er, I also digest pasta easier and it does not give me gas or cause my spasms , other things do. I get nauseous often due to what i have and nothing changes that. I was recommended a high protein low fiber diet no raw vegetables a lot of fruits are out because they're too acidic. . A medical professional should understand hormones medications and a disease that you might have can cause these issues, they would never say something as callous as you are just eating too much let me give you some tough love. I have to see several Specialists myself and I went to school to be an RN. Before being treated for anything or on any medications I was also active and maintained a normal body weight. losing too much if i was inflamed or ill, but other than that never overweight. So my Long Point is, you know your body you know if something's changed, you know you're on medication and you know what those medications are for. If you're only seeing a primary care physician you may want to ask to be referred to a nutritionist which means you need to keep very detailed records about what you eat and your physical activity and symptoms. Also if you don't already have one a GI specialist if you're having spasms through your intestines they may want to do colonoscopie to see if you have ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease ,IBS which you may already have if you're taking anti-spasmodics and know about. Keep.asking questions and find a doctor who will listen to you!!!
First off, I'm so sorry that you're experiencing this. It must be so frustrating and painful both physically and emotionally to go through this. I have not yet had surgery, but I can relate to you with the hiatal hernia. Pepto Bismal is my best friend. When I experience that nausea and gas. It's terrible to feel that sick. And outwardly you appear normal, so people don't understand what you're going through internally. I have to avoid peppers/onions, anything acidic, like red tomatoe sauce and I've also noticed cheese does this to me sometimes. Have you considered looking into lactose intolerance? I've noticed that many people discovery post-surgery that they're Lactose Intollerant.
I would certainly recommend using a food journal, or at least an app like My Fitness Pal along with a log book of all the times you feel sick and then compare EXACTLY what you ate to how you felt a few hours later.
I hope that helps and I hope you continue to keep us posted on your progress. Don't forget that you have people that support you here and know the struggle and you also (hopefully) have the option to see a nutritionist, your surgeon or even your PCP to help you diagnose your problem.
I have spasms off and on and I have nausea every time I eat. My pouch is fine after 6 years. Hormones ( insulin, thyroid, estrogen, etc.) are complicators BUT I've found eating to be the reason I put on any weight.
Keep a food journal and journal every bite you put in your mouth. Total your calories, grams of carbs, grams of protein and ounces of fluid (That is what I track). If you are like me - you will be amazed at what may have slipped into your eating that is causing extra calories and grams of carbs.
Sometimes I'm too nauseated to eat or my intestines are cramping so much that I don't want solid food - for those times I drink hot or cold protein drinks. Sometimes ready to drink and every morning I make a hot protein drink with whey isolate powder (SF flavored syrups to add variety).
I also weight myself every morning. I know if there is a "trend" of weight going up. If it gets to 5 pounds - I take action immediately. Journal, exercise and add more water.
My bariatric eating plan, for maintanence, calls for 1200-1400 calories, 100 gm carbs and 80 grams protein. If you are over your goal weight I would suggest lowering your calories and grams of carbs - but keep protein at 80 grams.
Eat PROTEIN first always - every meal, every snack - then veggies and fruit. Eat only REAL food, not fast food, processed food.
It is hard, hard work to maintain and even harder to take off gained weight - but it can be done - even with health challenges. It is a choice.
If you want to lose the weight you have to go back to basics.
Best wishes, Penny
i actually don't eat enough also part of the problem, but i have been feeling so bad the most i eat is about 500-600 calories daily.
not too much protein honestly i do have to change this but i'm in pain daily. I hope i can get an answer at my doctors appt on the 28th if my hiatal hernia has something to do with how i feel.
Thank you
i will up my protein and calorie intake see how it goes.
I'd be surprised if you are only taking in 500-600 calories per day and gaining weight. Log your whole intake in MyFitnessPal and be honest about weights, volumes, liquids etc.
Give us an average day and we can maybe give you some advice.

Are you saying you've been gaining on 500-600 calories a day? Because that just isn't possible.
